Hummm....1/72 maybe ?
Manufacturers like Cararama make 1/72th scale cars. The problem is that these are mostly diecast models. Here are a few examples :
and you may have a hard time "crushing" them realistically...

Ace Plastic Models has some 1/72 plastic car kits, but they are all WW2 http://www.hobbylinc.com/ace-olympia-mod-1938-saloon-staff-car-plastic-model-personnel-carrier-kit-1:72-scale-72518
There are a few more modern Russian cars here mixed in with the military stuff:
http://auto.scale-model-kits.com/scales/1-72.html
Perhaps a little small but there are lots of 1/87 (HO scale) cars

Matchbox and Majorette ( sp ? ) make toy cars in what I would call box scale . The cars are all scaled to fit the same size packaging , so your VW Bug ends up the same size as your 70s Muscle car . IRC , the scale of each car is printed on the bottom of the car , and used to be visible through the plastic packaging , haven't bought any in a while as my kids are grown . Available at Wally World or Toys R Us for under a couple of buck$ each . Majorette might be your best choice as they are a French company and make mostly European cars .

I think Majorette are 1/64, or 1/62. I used to buy them for my kid 15 - 20 yrs ago.

AFAIK, most (if not all) small scale diecast cars (not trucks) released by Majorette are closer to 1/64th scale than 1/72nd scale. In other words they would be a bit too big for a 1/72nd scale project

Thanks for the response guys.. im thinking by the sound of it 1/87 scale might be best suited.. max 1/100 possibly but depending on the car?

Oxford die cast cars are what you are looking for. They list 1/72nd in their range and they are mainly 19-1960#s stuff but they do a triple set of Volkswagen stuff with a beetle and a samba/camper van which should suit you with a bit of messing around.

You could buy a couple of the dicast cars and try embossing thin aluminium or foil over the front, side, roof and rear panels !!!! Take the molded chassis and seat of the model and scratch build something looking like it and add the foil panels to it and paint it ! Then crush it and add wheels plus broken glass !

there are also some Corgi cars in 1:76, but same as with Cararama models, they are Die cast...

I think there are other cars made by english die cast manufacturers You can find some of them by Oxford here :

You maybe also can find some of them by e-bay....
