Hi guys, stumbled across this photo on the internet, not really positive of its origin, but obviously not mine. I was thinking this could be an excellent idea for a diorama.

Anyone have a rough idea on when this "event" may have occurred (roughly the year I guess)? I'm thinking it would be cool to have the damaged KV-2 with some German armor on the road but not sure what exactly would be appropriate (Probably not a Panther G! LOL). I know the KV-2 was only produced up until 1942 and there were only a few hundred built but I don't really know their operational history.

Thanks for the help!

Photos of it have been widely published, including some in colour. I'm pretty confident that this particular wagon was in Lithuania and knocked out during Barbarossa in mid 1941. I'd need to dig out some books to confirm more details though.

I guess these are other views of the very same tank :

According to some captions I've found, it may have been knocked out by the 6th Panzer Division near the Lithuanian town of Rasyeinyia on June 24 or 25, 1941...

A few pages dedicated to the Rasyeinyia fightings from Steve Zaloga's "KV-1 & 2 Heavy Tanks 1939-45" book that give you some options for German tanks...

I don't think these were seen after 1941. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

You have plenty of options to choose from when it comes to german tanks. Do a Google image search for 'german tanks barbarossa' or 'german tanks 1941' for inspiration.

Depending on if you want the KV-2 as the centre of attention, you can choose a smaller or larger german tank.

Looks like it also took a shot through the gun barrel.

The "largest" German tank at this point in the war was the PzIV. You could also use PzIII's. I'm guessing that this KV was hit by artillery, or maybe an 88. It would make for an interesting dio though, especially that 3rd photo that Frenchy posted.

Some Russian captions mention a 105...

It's Raseiniai. There are plenty of famous KV-2 photos from the Battle of Raseiniai

KV-2 production actually ended in June 1941. This vehicle however, is one of the first production batch from November/December 1941 (you can tell by the lack of grooves on the sides of the recoil/recuperator cover). The best kit of the KV-2 is Trumpeter's but it will need some tweaking to accurately represent this vehicle since the kit depicts the later May/June 1941 production batch.

See my web site www.4bogreen.com in the 'Recipes' section for how to modify the kit.

I recognize that KV 2 , there's a few pictures of it in the old Squadron / Signal : # 6 . Soviet Panzers in Action ( 1973 ) . Back in the day I built a diorama of it using the Tamiya KV 2 . Simpler times

Awesome guys! Thanks so much for the help. I think in the end I am more looking to use this as inspiration and not so much replicate this vehicle exactly. I always have bad luck when I try to replicate things. I was really looking for a year-ish so I knew what German vehicles would be appropriate and, most importantly - their color. Thank you all for the advice, and the great information, I really appreciate it!

Color for anything german during that period would be overall dark grey.(With lots of dust.)

Thanks Marc! The more I think about this, if I can actually pull off the damaged KV-2 I might pair it with a SdKfz 250/3 or an Sdkfz 222, in paper gray. That might be cool
