Can anyone tell me what this tool is, and what it was used for, that is the steel coloured one at the bottom?

If you mean the three rods you have painted steel then these are the gun cleaning rods and are wood with metal fittings to interconnect.

Those are the gun cleaning rods, and usually are made of wood.
