Hey guys,
I'm planning on building an Asad Babil from the Tamiya T-72M1 kit and i heard that the turret from the Tamiya kit is from an M not an M1 and i cant seem to find a M1 turret on the internet ,so can you guys help me?
P.S. I know the Asad Babil is a stripped version of a T-72M1 ,but i cant seem to find the exterior differences so can you guys also tell me the small exterior differences of the tanks? That would be helpful!
Thanks guys!!!

Uhhmmm...
I'm afraid that your information wasn't correct.
The turret from the TAMIYA kit, IS from an M1 tank.
In fact the TAMIYA kit is excellent for an OOB build of either an Asad Babil or a NVA (East German) T72M1...
If you want to build a T-72M "Sadam" tank, then you need a different turret...

Check out SBS Models, they have great resin T-72 turrets that should not only help but have great detail.

Er no, I disagree. The Tamiya turret is an M (and a badly shaped one at that). The kit represents an East German (Polish built) Ubergangsversion which consisted of an M turret on an M1 hull and 8 spoked wheels.

T-72A turret will work for a T-72M1. Find a photo of what you want to build to make sure all the fittings are proper for your version.

Hi Jacques,
I'm thinking of using a Miniarm T-72A/AV late turret w/ the anti-radiation layer ,but some of the parts that are on this tank are missing in the kit. The cylindrical thing on top of the turret is missing from the kit (a rangefinder?). And some things which i cant describe.
Heres another pic of a guy from missing-lynx who i think built a Asad Babil with the Blast Models T-72M1 turret:

Hello Karlis,
the Miniarm turret wouldn't be appropriate for an Iraqi tank as none of them had the anti radiation cladding, AFAIK it was only featured on later model T-72 A turrets. I understand the SBS turrets are pretty nice so that may be an easier to find option than blast.
The cylindrcal device was intended to confuse ATGM trackers.

Hi Sean,
It seems like the Blast Models one has the most details & parts appropriate for the Asad Babil ,but i think i'll use the SBS one as it seems like the Blast Models one is OOP. Do you think that all the Asad Babils had the ATGM countermeasure ,or is the one in Fort Hood the only one.
This Asad doesnt have the countermeasure ,but has the 30mm laminated extra armour.

Seems like the dazzler was a pretty common fitting on Iraqi T-72s, in the above photo the mounting plate can be seen above the left smoke grenade launcher array.

The SBS T-72A turret is probably the best one to use as the Blast one is hard to find and more expensive.
Regarding the "Dazzler", I would add it as it is a unique identifier of a Iraqi piece. While all may not have had it, it screams "Iraqi" when it is on.

Hi;
Some Time Ago, Hobby Craft produced A T-72 lion Of Babil kit which was A Copy of the Tamiya T-72 and I think it was A Early Trumpy offering as they Marketed A number of T-72s under Different Banners. In the kit they offetred Decals for the Lion of Babil as well as Assad Babil. I have still Two in my Stash, and the Decals were Good Quality Apart from the rest of the kit.

Hi everyone,
Could i use the dazzler and other parts from the Kirin kit and place them onto the SBS T-72 turret? I can't find any other conversion or kit that has the dazzler.

The Tamiya kit comes with the dazzler as an option for the "desert scheme".

The kit you are talking about is an very early Trumpeter kit,not Tamiya.I picked up several of those Hobbycraft kits just for the decals at a swap meet a couple of years ago.

The very early Trumpeter kits were copies and mix-matches of both Tamiya and DML (DML turrets on Tamiya hulls) etc...
The Tamiya kit does come with the Dazzler, as well as SOME of the early Trumpter kits (they had 3 of them, and then HobbyCraft took at least one of the boxings under their name).
I cannot speak for the decals.

I always wanted to build one of those, but could't find good photo reference. I read some modifications were made to the suspension, that won't be a problem as it is covered by the sideskirts. Another modification was made to the lower rear hull, I think an armor plate was added to protect the engine, I never found a clearer picture of this area, but it surely looks different than a normal T-72's.
Best regards.
José.

Hi José,
I found a back picture of an ex-Czech T-72M1 and i can't really spot the differences from the picture you have. It doesn't seem like this Asad Babil has the 30mm of armour fitted on the back.
