Hi guys, a quick question: what would be an appropriate color (acrylic and preferably Tamiya or Vallejo) of a Panzer IV F2 serving in DAK or in Sicily? Have the old Italeri Panzer IV F2 and the newer DML Panzer III ausf J vorpanzer and been meaning to paint them both as a vehicle belonging in that sphere of operations. Thank you!

Nigel,

If Tamiya go for its XF60 Dark Yellow. Either use it as is or lighten it with XF57 Buff to suit your preference.

Cheers,

Tat

I would imagine that these tanks had the second Tropen scheme, grey and light tan, or just the base colour of plain tan RAL 8020. Indeed that's what we see in your photo of a Kubelwagen.

I'm no Pz.4 expert. Did the DAK get any of these tanks?

Rommel received a handful of these for Alamein battle, they participated in Tunisia also. Allies named them Mk IV special, for the long 75mm gun.

For the late campaign in Africa, I suggest RAL 8020/7027 tropen scheme, as mentioned. Don't know for Tamiya mix, but Vallejo Model air have both colors.

RAL 8020-Vallejo 71 117
RAL 7027-Vallejo 71 118

This is my DAK Dragon Ausf.F2, painted some time ago, with these colors and weathered.

Cheers!

That Pz.4 belongs to Panzer Regiment 7, 10th Panzer Division, and I believe that they are in the 5th Panzer Army rather than the DAK? The period is February 1943.

Anyway; these tanks have been demolished in explosions that threw mud over almost everything. The rectangular panel in the foreground is actually painted blue-grey! So we must be wary of these wrecks.

An explosion at that site

Whatever you do (personally I favour 8000/7008), no Dunkelgrau under the Tropen colours. By the time F2/Gs were being shipped to Africa they were factory painted in the Tropen scheme over primer.

I was actually going to ask a question like this concerning a Pz III H I am about to paint right now. So, under the Tropen camo would be primer as opposed to the previous gray the early vehicles were shipped in?

Thanks for all the replies. I thought only the shade of Dunkelgelb was the hotly contested issue in painting german vehicles...

Thanks for the info on vallejo colors! I'm going to check them out when I visit the store again. I was thinking of doing a plain dark yellow coat but I like the subtlety this trupen scheme provides... anyone have more pictures of kits/tanks painted in this fashion?

It looks like 8020 is pinkish light tan and 7027 grey-green, from the photo.
