Hi guys, Armorama-UK is pleased to announce the beginning of a Special Group Build in order to commemorate the events of June 1944. The build is being jointly administered by myself and Merlin. See below for rules.

Campaign Description

Overlord 2004 is a kind of Super Group Build... there will be a "Campaign Page" with a list of entrants with links to "Campaign Diaries" (which will take the form of forum threads) where participants can post updates and pics of their entries.

There will be a single Campaign Gallery where all pictures should be stored; please name pictures by Entrant & Subject - i.e. "MerlinTyphoon1" etc.

All entrants must remember this is NOT an "official campaign"; it will not be possible to award Campaign Medals as such to appear on Main Site stats. However, an Overlord 2004 "medal" will be designed which all completing participants can add to their signature lines if they wish or the following text: " Overlord 2004 SGB Armorama-UK"

Overlord 2004 is open to all Armorama-UK members.

Campaign Rules

1) Starting date: - Feb 14th. All entries to be submitted by 5th June 2004

2) Entries: One model per participant.

3) Subjects: Allied Units. The intention is that this group build should form a fitting memorial to those who gave their lives in the liberation of Europe, so Allied subjects only please. The entry to be of a single model; either a vehicle, aircraft, ship or figure depicting an actual Allied unit taking part in the events of D-day to D+3 (6th to the 9th of June 1944).

4) Display: Entries may be on a base; this may be in the form of a protective or display base with any groundwork limited to that required to place the model in its surroundings.

Hi Dave

Needless to say... count me in on this one!

I'll have a sort through my shelves to decide what to build... but a Typhoon ain't a bad place to start!

Let me say here, Armorama-UK will be delighted to welcome "guest" members who want join in with this exciting build. :-)

All the best

Obviously I'm in the build.
I have to choose between a Royal Marines Centaur and a 1/48 Mustang III. I live just a couple of miles from the site of Coolham airfield so a 315 sqdn. plane would be good.

May I inquire as to why this is not going to be an "Official" Campaign?

Hi Kencelot,
There are a couple of reasons for making it an SGB.
First of all Armorama-uk doesn't have all the facilities that the main site has for running an official campaign, with large galleries and space for lots of individual pics etc. Nor can we award & display medals and awards in the same way.
Last of all, neither myself or Merlin has any experience of running something like this, and agreed that we wanted to keep it simple, few rules, and fairly informal.
The late start date has something to do with it as well.

Hi there Kencelot

I most certainly hope there WILL be an official Campaign as well, and that A-UK's build will get the ball rolling!

'Till then, Overlord 2004 should be give everyone plenty to enjoy. :-)

So am I to understand this is just a single model build and not a full fledged dio?

Also because this is being sponsored by the UK site is there another page/section/site where we post? I can't seem to find a link here to a UK section

So, is this for A-Uk members only, or can someone else join?

That's right, but the base or groundwork can be as fancy as you like.

Sorry! My sig line doesn't seem to be working as a link anymore... I'll have to fix it! Try Overlord 2004

Because only members can post on MSN groups, you'll have to join A-UK to participate. We'd love to have as many as possible join in, so please take out "Guest Membership".

Hope to see you and many others join in.

All the best

Hi ThomasB,
As it says in Merlin's post -"Let me say here, Armorama-UK will be delighted to welcome "guest" members who want join in with this exciting build"
ShermiesRule - There is a link to the thread on the UK site in Merlins post - just click on the underlined words 'Overlord2004'. If this doesn't work then try http://groups.msn.com/Armoramauk/messages.msnw
The main reasons for making it a single model, or single model + base are that Dioramas tend to overshadow single pieces when viewed together, and there are a lot of aircraft & figure ( and ship?)modellers who feel excluded from these builds when a diorama attracts all the attention.
This is not an exhibition of an individual modellers skill, but a tribute to all those men of the Allied forces that fought for the liberation of Europe. ( Hence the D to D+3 timescale - this allows Canadian, Polish & Free French units to be included).
I hope that this covers your questions.

Friends,

please reconsidder guys........... why not host it just here on Armorama like we did with the RMG Campaign. The RMG is a Dutch Campaign that is hosted from the Dutch Section. Why not ask Jim and the CCC for some help on this one in order to make it a real Campaign.

I would hate to see two "campaigns" running separately...a UK Group Build and an official Campaign hosted by some others. Please join forces and make 1 official Campaign.... I think there is plenty of interest for an official D-Day Campaign.

I've found them useful myself.
Tried to post them as links, but doesn't seem to be working!

Danny, I'll talk to Merlin re. your suggestion.

Danny,

You have the advantage on us. The Dutch site is an integral part of the main site, whereas Armorama-UK is hosted seperately on MSN. Merlin is away for the weekend, so will talk to him again on Monday. Also it may be that opening a full campaign would encourage requests to allow Axis subjects which would be outside our wishes for the SGB.

i wholeheartedly agree, lets use this to commemorate the brave souls of all the allied nations that gave western europe the freedom it now has.

no-one can complain of a lack of choice if they can build anything froms ships to tanks!

cheers

Dave,

Just talk to Jim about the options of running it on Armorama under a UK flag. Ik don't know enough of the site to judge the possibilities. Just ask Jim, maybe he has some ideas.

If you move it to the main site as a full campaign I don't see why you cannot institute the same rules about Allied only. Those who do not follow the rules can won't qualify for the ribbon/prize.

You could also alter the title to Allied Overlord 2004 or something similar.

Eagle / ShermiesRule. I've pm'd StaffJim for some technical advice on possibly tranferring this SGB. I also have to wait until Monday until Merlin ( my co-conspiritor on this) returns.

I don't think Staff Jim will be against it since he tried to start a D-Day Campaign earlier. I don't think his was limited to Allied but it is close enough.

Howdy fellas,

Ya know, I must agree here. I've tried a couple of times to blow some air back into Jim's original plan to honour the upcoming 60th anniversary of D-Day celebration by creating a "D-Day Campaign"....but apparently my lungs don't work like they used to.
SO......I started the groundwork for my own little D-Day diorama 'homage' and plan to finish it in time for the celebration (actually, I've got 3 going, and a possible 4th).
Anyway...I will pay attention to this thread to see what is eventually worked out, and if maybe one of you have the youthful 'air' to get this thing on the dockets.
For the life of me, I have not been able to figure out why there has been luke-warm interest in this endeavor in the first place.

Tread.

I don't know about the 'youthful' tag, TreadHead; but in one form or another this WILL go ahead.

Howdy winch,

Really like the DUKW idea. I picked one of those up a few weeks ago on clearance........No, I can't even think about it, too many projects already!
Nice choice though!
