Hey fellas,
My wife bought me Tamiya's 35346 easy eight Sherman, as an early Christmas gift.
I want to build this to look like the Fury Sherman. I know.. So cliché.
I have a couple of questions.
1. What are the tracks called that were on Fury? They aren't the same ones in the kit.
2. What kit can I buy to add the TC machine gun, is that a .30 cal gun?
3. Isn't there a company that makes resin stowage sets for Sherman's?
4. How do I add the "fury" to the barrel.
5. Who makes metal tow cables for these?
6. Am I missing anything really glaring?
Thanks for any help,
Dustin

To model the movie tank you'd also need to convert it to a M4A2E8. Different engine deck among other things from the A3.

Anthony - Thank you sir! That's exactly what I was looking for.
Kenneth - Do you know of an aftermarket engine deck?

Just a thought, all that stowage is going to completely cover the engine deck.
Also, are you entering it in a contest, who are you trying to please yourself or others. When you look at it or show your friends, are they going to see Fury and say cool,or are they going to point out a wrong engine deck or some other detail ?
I mean ultimately it's what you want, how far you want to go to make it 100 % match the movie, your satisfaction is important.

Dustin,
Since you're at it, why not consider putting in figures:

Anthony - I'm just building this for my own enjoyment. I'm definitely nothing to obsess over the little details. Now that you mention the stowage covering the engine deck, I probably won't bother with it.
Nobody that'll ever see it at my house would ever know the difference.
I just want it to resemble Fury. Not 100% accurate.
Tat - Those figures are really nice!

Not off hand. Try New Tiger Model Designs or Tank Workshop. Other option is a kit bash. The stowage would cover some but its not just the engine deck itself. Of the dozens of Fury models ive seen built, not one was converted to A2 config. You may just ignore it.

While the Sherman used in the movie was an M4A2E8 no A2E8s were used by the US Army in the ETO. In 1945 the tank would have been an M4A3E8 which is what the Tamiya kit is. Likewise the track in the film was largely used on post-war Shermans (it was less damaging to roads) but I have seen some photos with that track on Shermans in Germany. As for the rest it's all available (in fact if you really want the later track AFV club makes a link by link set [I think they used to make a vinyl set as well but it wasn't all that good]). Remember to get a German Helmet! BTW M4A2E8s were used by the Soviets.

What about the TC machine gun and mount?
Kenneth - I think I'll look around at tank workshop.

John - Thank you for that information! So technically.. That tank wouldn't have had those tracks on in 1945, am I understand you correctly?

It might have but far and away the kit tracks were more common. Also something I forgot and haven't seen mentioned, to correct the hull to an A2 you also need to slightly change the angle of the rear of the hull. Better to stick with the A3.

Just to clarify I think I've only seen the movie tracks on 2 or 3 tanks.

Just to re-emphasize....you do not have to convert the kit into an M4A2 unless you with to faithfully represent the movie prop. If the filmmakers could have found an M4A3E8, they would have used it. They compromised by using the M4A2 which wasn't accurate. By not converting the kit, you'll be more accurate than the movie

Hi All,
Just a few thoughts here on "Fury." There was, indeed, a tank named "Fury" in ETO and was, IIRC, an M4A3E8. Some digging might turn up a couple of pics on the web. As for tracks, I would either go with the kit tracks (simple, cheap and no sag, which is correct) rather than aftermarket. Dragon did do a set of T80's (steel chevron, rubber backed) as part of their DS line, but they are getting hard to come by. Further I would seriously dissuade you from using ANY of the AFV Club HVSS track sets as they are fragile and badly engineered.
And just to whet your appetite, here are some pics of the actual vehicle at "Tankfest 2016" at Bovington:
Good luck with your project!
Regards,
Georg

IIRC they actually had an A3E8 but it broke down and rather than delaying production they went with the A2. Best of luck on the project, Sherman are like potato chips, you can't just build one.

One mistake in the kit is Tamiya's inclusion of the engine crank, to be mounted on the rear bulkhead. Omit that. The M4A3 never had that accessory

Yes, it's a .30 caliber.
