Big question..
BMD 1, Asu-85 in the inital stages of the invasion.
Early on, BMP 1 ,Btr 70, Brdm 2, T62, Zsu 23/4, some Scuds... and lots more
Later, BMP 2, BTR 80 and more modernized versions of the T62
Which vehicle were you thinking of modeling in Afghanistan??

At the beginning of the invasion in 1979 there was BMD-1,BMD-2,SA-4(these were withdrawn in 1980).During the rest of the war T-62,T-55(mostly being used by the Soviet backed Afghan military),MT-LB,BMP-1,BMP-2,BMR-1,BMR-2,GAZ-66,URAL-375,ZIL-131,KAMAZ-4320,MAZ-500,BM-21,BM-14,BM-22,M-30,M-1942 76mm field guns. There was also old T-34/85 being used by government forces and even Type 63 multiple rocket launchers seen being used by rebel forces.

Don't forget 2S1, 2S3, 2S4, 2S5, 2S7, TOS-1(testing). If it wasn't a T-64, T-72 or T-80 chances there was one in Afghanistan.

Probably some ZSU 23-4s too. They make pretty decent anti-personnel weapons.

Mentioned in the 3rd post. There were many there, often had radar equipment removed for extra ammo storage. There was a whole host of other AA equipment there too.

I'm trying less to depict a particular vehicle so much as when the Russians were realizing, "Hey, I thought we were supposed to be winning this war!"
