I am working on a Magach 3 (M-48 patton) and had to install a piece of equipment on the side of the turret just below the commanders cupola. While doing so I could not figure out exactly what it is. Maybe some kind of optics? It looks like it is adjustable as it has some kind of knob on it. Below is a picture of it.

Are you talking about the 60mm mortar?

It looks like a rangefinder to me.

The horizontal tube below the clear rangefinder is a 60mm mortar.
