What kind of ideas do you plan on to qualify for Overlord 2004?

I am going to try a stab at Maj Howard and the capture of Pegasus Bridge over the Orne River.

The kit I plan on building is the Airix 1/72 (1/76?) LCM MK II and Sherman Mk II kit #03301. This kit includes the old and rather nasty Airfix 1/76 scale Sherman kit. I am replacing it with the 1/76 scale Fujimi M4A1 75mm (yes, I read the posts regarding the D-Day use of LCMs as infantry vice tank transporters).

The Fujimi Sherman is a better kit although half of the suspension truck is molded to the fuselage side. I chose the Fujimi kit as a replacement since the Airfix armor kits are normally 1/76 even though they are currently labeled as 1/72 scale. Because of this, I really don't know if the LCM is truly 1/72 or 1/76 scale. I may have to do some math and figure it out.

The Airfix box top refers to the Airfix Sherman as the Sherman Mk II (aka M4A1), but it is a welded hull M4. Not to be outdone, the Fujimi kit is supposed to be a radial engined M4A1 but includes a Ford GAA engine inside. Not much of a problem since the kit will be built buttoned up. The Fujimi Sherman has a decent interior and includes a subturret floor and complete turret baset. I posted box top scans in case there were people who were unfamiliar with the two kits.

I'll look forward to seeing that Pegasus Bridge dio. Shermie - I costed up a build for a company that asked if I could build one for them, in 54mm it would have caused their MD to have a heart attack - it's a complex structure.
Just for a change I'm going to be doing a 'plane instead of armour. The subject will be a 1/48 MustangIII from the Tamiya kit using the kit markings ( stated as 316 Squadron, but 'PK' codes were 315 Sqdn)+ D-day stripes. 315 (Polish) Squadron RAF was flying from an Advanced Landing Ground at Coolham about 5 miles from my home so I have local history and the D-day build all in one subject.
They flew escort to gliders on 6th June; and a 'Ramrod' on the 7th bombing targets near Caen, straffing 'targets of opportunity' on the way home.

Link to some reference photos for Pegasus Bridge and a couple of the Merville Battery for Airborne involvement in the D-Day campaign.

I think I am going to have to take a lot of liberties with historical accuracy. The complicated side of the bridge unfortunately is on the glider side of the bridge. The may to be simplified. Also to fit a whole glider 30 yards from the bridge would require too much space so I may have to settle for a partial piece of glider nearly right up to the bridge.

Thanks for the pics but they are the same ones that are all over the web. I will have to dig up my copy of the Longest Day and give that a look over for any useful info.

Howdy fellas,

I actually have two in mind. The first is a significantly large dio (3.5ft x 2.5ft) which will include a german bunker on a hill, plus an approaching Sherman fitted with wading trunks. The second is a dio of the fantastic bravery of Brecourt Manor.

Tread.

Hi there

I've got two in mind too.

The first is the obvious one... for a Brit aircraft modeller, at least... a Hawker Typhoon!

The second is down to a neat pic I found of a war-weary Spitfire MkV used for air-sea rescue work during the invasion - it would be a fitting way to honour the countless individuals who, maybe, don't always get their fair share of glory, but whose contributions helped make the whole operation possible.

All the best

Thanks for the offer. I've been checking out the tour pics and I am very jealeous. I will probably have to take a lot of liberties and make a much simplified bridge. In 1/35 that bridge would be too big and dominate the scene. Plus my scratchbuilding skills are still novice at best.

I know I'm late in the game, but was "given" two days which are completely empty (well almost...). With nothing beter to do I wanted to actually do some modeling. Why not join in on a campaign?

Because of the limit in time to the due date, I was wondering if I could just build a Willys jeep from the 307th Airborne Engineer Bat of the 82nd Airbourne Div. I know they were headed to the Rhine but are unsure of when they passed Normandy. I've tried to look, but found myself just getting interested in too many things. I still have two and a half weeks left, all I need to find out is which unit I could make my Willys from... I hope I'm not being too tedious and lazy...

But at any rate I won't sign up untill I find something definite...
