So I got these two kits from a great friend and artillery modeller and they have been on my radar enough that I started them. The intent is to build one straight out of the box to represent the kit as it was meant to be, a 1970s vintage toy like model kit. The second, however, is going to be a departure from KISS and will hopefully expand my modelling skills and give me a somewhat more technically accurate platform. Straight OOB on the Renwal kit, several parts were/are missing. I have been stealing from the Revell History Maker kit to maintain plastic part integrity. Some parts you will see just had to be replaced (road wheel/return roller mounting pins missing). The second build will require some mold making and casting of parts, road wheels and return rollers in particular, and I hope to do some extensive scratch building to the interior, suspension, and engine bay.

I have serious doubts about these ending up working, but they have recieved two coats of decal film and we will see..

I have always liked the old instructions and how they had written instructions to go along with the visuals...

Sharp eyes will note that there are actually TWO kits in here, a bonus M-41 Walker Bulldog also of Renwal descent.

This should be fun and interesting. You say a good 1970s OOB build. Actually it will be a good 1950s OOB as the original Renwal kit was from the late '50s. I have seen this made into a real gem with a bit of elbow grease.

Here is a link to an extensively improved kit build by Wim Vink, back in 1999.
For the less adventurous souls out there, at the very least, one should delete the muzzle brake and replace the tracks and sprockets.

Progress is quick on the OOB version. I had to use a fair amount of road wheels and return rollers from the 82 kit to make up for missing parts on this one. Some parts I just used styrene rod and bored out the reciever holes to fit. The 82 is going to require some mold making and casting to get the wheels UNLESS anyone knows where I can find 1/32nd scale M-47 wheels.

Gino- you are right on with the age, I was trying to be generous LOL. The History Makers kit has a 1982 manufacture stamp in it, I couldnt find anything on the Renwal to indicate when it was punched out.

Coming along well. I have seen Wim Vink's build, it and his other old kit build/updates are awesome.

If you need running gear parts, there was an old Renwal/Revell/Matchbox 1/32 M47 kit that is still readily available and relatively cheap. The running gear should be compatibly if not exactly the same.

Hi Brian,
are you sure your kit is 1/32 scale and not 1/35? I heard Monogram labelled their old model as 1/32 scale but infact they were 1/35 (i.e. thier 1/32 M48 upper hull matchs exactly Tamiya 1/35 lower hull). May be the same with yours? If so you could use lots of parts from 1/35 M48 kits.

The Renwal kits in all their iterations are 1/32. Revell has five different line-ups of large scale armor under their banner. The M48 is from the former Monogram kits of the 1950-60s and are closest to 1/35. The Renwal kits are true to 1/32. Then there are the former Monogram 1/32 kits like the Panzer IV and M4A1 Sherman. Then there are the old Revell 1/40 and finally the new Revell of Germany 1/35 kits.

Don't confuse them Scalemates is your best source for sifting through the 60 year history of some of these molds.

The Renwal M47 is still readily available in the SSP Revell line-up. Its suspension pieces are the same as in the M55, just like the M41 and M42 shared pieces.

And if you still come up short, I have a built-up Renwal M55 that you can have for simple postage.

Just PM me if you want it at any point.

GOOD NEWS!!! I scored another History Makers Kit! So parts to do the next build will be abundant! I will even have spares so I can really go to town on the interior with cutting out the sad details and hopefully adding in more accurate stuff... little bits of progress made on the OOB one too, closed in the gun area, painted it off white, applied barrel which is UGGGGGLLLYYY, and closed up the body of the transport unit. Primed transport unit and will do the gun when its all closed up.

Nice one to follow, I like those fun builds! Well the models itself are children of their time that's right (look at the molded-on tools ), but are coming along quite nicely eventually.

What I always find hilarious is those box arts: They are even more toy-like than the actual model (taking chattering crew guys while firing or the driver in the Patton with turret obviously on the move *ouch* )

So I'll be following this one!
