Hello---I am looking at a King Tiger with the early production turret, commonly called Porsche turret, and was wondering what was the better kit in 1/72 scale and were most of these versions
equipped with zimmerit. The reason I ask is that not all models are made with zimmerit molded on and I don't want to add it, not my idea of fun.So if there is a good kit without zimmerit were there certain models manufactured without it? Thanks---John

John, I believe that all of the operational KTs with the Porsche turret had Zimmerit. Bovington tank museum have one without, but that was a non operational prototype. The Airfix kit is the only one I've seen, and it's OK apart from not having zimmerit. It looks like both Dragon and Trumpeter do have Porsche turrets with zimmerit, I don't which is best. It may well be a question of what you can get hold of, what is in stock.

Thanks Matthew, I've been doing some digging and the Bovington tank is the second pre production tank? I guess. Supposedly it was used for testing along with the first pre production tank so that camo scheme and number 300 are bogus. I guess it was actually overall dunklegelb or something close? I have read the best or one of the best kits in 1/72 is Revell, they do Henschel and Porsche but neither has zimmerit. I saw the Trumpeter with zimmerit but it just looked to "toyish" to me.YMMV---John

Atak models does a zimmerit set for the Revell King Tiger Porsche turret. The set includes a resin replacement turret with zimmerit mantlet as well as resin armor for the hull. It's one of the few sets of Atak zimmerit I have.

Looks as if the Dragon version is out of production now anyway, shame, it even came with etched grilles. The Trumpeter kit has moulded on cables and other horrible bits, and I agree their own box top even makes it look poor. Good luck with the Revell kit plus add on zimmerit, remember to show us...

I have the Revell kit on the way and will be ordering Atak zimmerit soon. I was looking at different subjects and came across white 11, from Chateaudon France in 1944. It was in Funklenk division 316. Radio control demolition unit? What's that? Not remote control tanks????? Thanks---John

I have been looking for some good drawings of Tiger number 11 from unit 316 Funklenpanzer in France August 1944. As best I can tell from some old pictures and other modelers version of this is was pretty much overall dark yellow with a few wisps of green on the turret, hull and side skirts. The wheels look to be overall dark yellow? Also the cross on the front-side of the hull is half covered by the side skirt? I am guessing the only markings were the crosses on the hull and the number 11 on the turret. Any help appreciated.---John
