Hi Olivier,

Thanks a lot or posting these - I‘ll be going at the end of the month, and these pics have really whetted my appetite.

A question: On the Panzermuseum‘s website they say you have to have express written permission to take any pictures. Is this actually true, or did the museum staff not pay any attention when you took yours?

Thanks,

Jerry

I was not aware of such a rule, if it exists. I have gone there twice and openly took pictures during my both visits. The staff were present and I can tell I was not the only one to take pictures.
No one came and asked me to stop using my camera.

Olivier, thanks for your speedy reply. I‘ll just go ahead and start taking pictures and play stupid if anyone stops me.

Hi!
Actually it says on the homepage that taking pictures for private use is generally permitted. If you plan/wish to publizise in a commercial magazine or sell DVD´s with pictures of the vehicles in the museum, you need a permission, and then (as far as I know) it might be possible that you must pay for a permission. I would guess that publication of pictures in the internet is free as long as the homepage is free to access, then I guess it is not commercial in any sence. They made that rule because they became aware of people who picture the museum vehicles intensively and later sell DVD´s with the pictures and making money on the museum´s work.

Andreas, this is a sensible policy but I guess it's a bit hard for the staff to detect the "professional" photographer from the casual modeler taking pics for future reference or just for the fun of sharing them like I did.

You will LOVE them!!! And don't need to pay to take pictures. The only concern is - you can't use a tripod for this, only a monopod.

Hi Christopher
We could have met on the autobahn while we traveled! In Mailly you don't have that much stuff but at least all the vehicles have a free access for the public.
I didn't stop in Koblenz. What is worth a stop there?

Bovington! I'd love to have the opportunity of a visit there as well as at Lesany in Czech republic. Maybe when I retire

Edson,
what's the issue with using a tripod?

Usually it's a health & safety thing - tripods can be trip hazards for dopey members of the public who are so fixated on the tanks that they don't look where they are going! The AAF museum in Virginia not only bans tripods, they also ban flash. This means there's no hope of getting good shots of any of their exhibits. A suspicious mind might wonder if it helps boost sales of their own postcards and books...

G'day Oliver

I'm going to Munster in March. How far is the museum from the train station?

A Staff member of Bovington told me that cameras with tripods are not allowed there because this kind of combination allow more professional pictures, and there was people taking this type of photos of the museum's collection to use in comercial websites or publications, so, gaining money on the museum work.

Makes sense to me.

Hi Rob!
The museum is approximately 1,5-2km from a train station. Do not mix up "Munster" with "Münster" when booking a train. Both lay about 250km away from each other. The name of the station is Munster/Örtze. Be aware that Munster does not lay on a main railway track, it is only a regional connection. So, depending on where you start, it might need some changing of trains. You should consider taking a rental car. On Mondays German museums are always closed. In winter, it might be cold inside as there are no heating facilities in the Panzermuseum´s hangars.

Hey Olivier !

What's this talk about retirement ?.... you haven't made Field Marshal yet !
Koblenz is quite interesting since there are not just tanks but also gun, rifles etc. and many modern Prototyps there ... quite a variety of unique displays.
.... most things are so tightly confine you actually have to squeeze by and can't avoid touching them... no issue with taking photos as well.

Don't think we could have met on the Autobahn .... myself being too fast

Cheers

G'day Mr Battle

Smartarse - you'll keep!

For those not in the know, in 2013 I visited Saumur with the other half and left her to visit the chateau while I went to the tank museum. Turned out the chateau was closed on a Monday (and it was a Monday). I still haven't lived it down.

G'day Andreas

Thanks for that. I checked - it's a Friday when I will be there and I'm coming up from Hanover for the day. Yes, I realised which Munster it is - not much use going to the other one.

As for cold - it will be March, and I'd rather it was cold than hot and stuffy!

Thanks again.

Hi!

Well, not that bad from Hannover:

https://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query2.exe/dn?ld=15040&protocol=https:&seqnr=2&ident=hp.03057940.1507142548&rt=1&rememberSortType=minArrival&REQ0HafasScrollDir=1

90-100min travel time and one change of train. If you would take a car, it would take you half the time without traffic jam, but that motorway between Hannover and Soltau Nord/Munster ALWAYS has construction sites with heavy traffic jams.

So, the train is the more relaxing way.

Unfortunately, you can only plan the train after the Bahn´s winter schedule is open which is from mid of December onwards. Tell me when you are going there, I wasn´t there myself for a long time and maybe I do have time...and I have a car.

Andreas
