HI Everyone,
I've seen this KV-1 on documentary a couple of times and think it would be a great subject to model. However, the image is blurry and I can't read Russian.

I would be grateful if someone could type the word in Cyrillic for me and give me a translation.

Thank you,

Gaz

Edit: I feel pretty foolish, forgetting to add the photo.

I read it like Кутузовец
Rough translation to English will be "Kutuzov's kin"
Mikhail Kutuzov was Fieldmarshal of Russian Empire. He fought and won
some important battles agains the Ottoman Empire, but is famous for commanding the Russian forces in the Battle of Borodino(1812).

Angel,
Thank you very much! That picture is much better than mine.

I have read of Kutuzov, he was a great leader that understood and cared for his soldiers. I'm glad for the connection to Russian military tradition.

Thank you again!

You're welcome Gary.
The tank seems to be from the 3d Guards Tank Brigade of 7th Tank Corps,5th Tank Army.

Thank you Ivan and Angel!
The latest photo shows me the other side of the turret and you've also given me the unit information.

Excellent!

Gary,
The timeframe for the unit given in my previous post is between July 1st and August 24 1942.
If you copy and google: КВ Кутузовец you will find more images of the tank.

Copying and searching on images returns this image:

https://ic.pics.livejournal.com/kv_bear/46297521/8053/8053_original.jpg

The picture shows the right side clearly, including the '30' partially worn off under the 'Кутузовец'; a much vaguer suggestion of the same number on the left side can be seen in the previous images in this thread.

Another image, of a KV-1 'Nevsky', shows the unit marker more clearly:

https://ic.pics.livejournal.com/kv_bear/46297521/8415/8415_original.jpg

Interestingly, at the base of the right side of the turret below the unit symbol are what look suspiciously like kill marks for tanks and artillery pieces, similar to the markings the Germans used for their unit designations on vehicles and equipment. The marks used don't appear to be standardized, though; the KV-1 'Merciless' (беспощадный) from the Soviet 12th Tank Regiment, 1st Moscow Motor Rifle Division, shows entirely different kill marks:

Just watched a documentary last night that had the video the screen capture came from. WW 2 in Colour. Shows it riding up the fairly steep slope. Interesting.

Angel,
Thank you for the search tip! It's opened up a new world of information for me, even if I can't read the Cyrillic.
