Variants of this engine have been the backbone of Russian armor for years. Besides a number of tanks, it powers the AT-T and any number of big MAZ 8x8 trucks.
The engine is vary modular. Prime power can be pulled from either end. Also the exhaust and intake manifolds are reversable so a design engineer can pull air and/or exhaust from either end.
In most tank applications the engine mounts transversely but in truck applications it mounts for to aft. Consequently the transmission is almost always mounted separately from the engine and connected to it by an intermediate driveshaft or gearbox.
Actually it is a rather elegant design and a very flexible prime power unit.
The MiniArt model appears to offer two different air cleaner options. I believe the boxy style air cleaner is the later variant. This late design is used on many Russian tanks as well as on the later 8x8 MAZ trucks. I have seen earlier MAZ trucks that have been retrofitted with this later cleaner probably to increase the commonality between the more often used and more available tank air cleaner cartridges. This effort also reduces supply and inventory headaches.
Please forgive if some of these details are found to be in error. This information was gleaned over a number of years of research into heavy MAZ trucks and there are no doubt gaps in my knowledge on this subject.
