I was at the Virginia military Museum in Nokesville VA yesterday
they brought out their M50 Sherman they just finished restoring
After they ran it i was looking at it one of the things that stood out was notches in the lower hull edges where the inner wheels are

They provided clearance to allow removal of the inside bogie wheels.

Tanks built with HVSS came with the notches factory-made, but IIRC tanks upgraded from VVSS to HVSS (like in the postwar period) had to have these notches cut/ground into them. I assume corresponding metal was added inside?

No. The notches were small and were right at the corner where the hull sides overlap the floor plate. It's not a vulnerable spot (and covered by two bogie wheels and a suspension arm) so I doubt there was any perceived additional risk. It wasn't like the hogging out of metal inside the right front of the turret.

Thanks Kurt - I wasn't sure if the area needed any reinforcement.
