Hi Folk. this is a labour of love for me as 20 years ago I owned a real one of these. I originally was going to cast this in resin but have instead decided to do a one off build of it. This is progress so far and I still have to do the correct tool box / spare wheel carrier (behind the cab) and finish the rear body. It is a mixture of 3 kits - Italeri GMC (chassis rails) Tomy (Italeri) gun tractor and Tamiya Quad gun tractor and of course a lot of scratch building.

First pic is of the original truck (pic courtesy of the Australian War Memorial Data base)

more pics can be seen in MY GALLERY on pages 1 & 5.

As normal any and all comments would be welcome. Also please remember that the body is only placed on the chassis at this stage for photo purposes.

You are one amazing modeler Mr Roo.
How much of the undercarriage will be seen? Granted i know there wil be a bed, but from a certain camera angle i am just wondering what might be seen. No particular reason why though.

I have to echo Ron here----another Roo scratch stunner.

Cliff, with all the under body detail, maybe displaying the final build on a small mirrored base would be attractive --- a nice treat for the viewer to be able to see the entire vehicle, i.e. all the under body detail reflected in the mirror, (without having to handle the model). Roo, you are truly a Master Modeler in the softskin department.

Just plain WOW. The cable winch is novel. I am always in awe of the vehicles that you build. I knew next to nothing about these different variants until you started to build them and share them with us here.

Cliff,
Again this won knocks me off my chair. You have educated us all with your building skills.
I think what steve suggested would be a good idea putting it on a mirrored base.

this is a good idea and one I had not thought of so it is a real possibility I will do this.

"...... I originally was going to cast this in resin but have instead decided to do a one off build of it....."

.....but...but....but, ahhhhh come on 'Roo! You're just doin' this to get back at me for not posting sooner aren't you? Just tryin' to get back at me.....hmmmmm, O.K., O.K.......I understand, make me do it myself, a "you can do it grasshoppa'" kinda thing, right!?!

Now, being a bit of a 'dappler' in scratchbashing myself, I can tell you all one thing. When you see that many colours on just the subframe, you know you have your homework cut out for you!

Absolutely impressive stuff there Maynard G! Could you be so kind as to describe how you did your cab surgery? And which parts are which? And how you intend to fill where the windshield frame meets the cab roof? And which wheels you intend to use? And what you used to fill the backside of the frame rails? And which doors do you plan on using? And will you be using real wood for your plank siding in your cargo box? And why you chose the GMC frame rails? And do you plan to add wiriing and hoses to the engine compartment? And will you be using the Quad Tractor seats? And why the original CMP windshield frame wouldn't work? And what method do you plan to use when you put on the rear cargo area cover? And are those straps or ropes at the top/side edge of the cargo cover? And.........whew!.......{taking a breath....}...will you be putting that wee 'Roo bar on the front grille/bumper area? And are the wheel brake drums there for size or spacing or both? And if you are adding a 'woodgrain' look to the cargo bed, how will you accomplish that? And what's yer favourite colour?

Tread.

OK I will try and answer this as best I can.

The only parts of the Tamiya Quad body I used were the front guards, and upper body parts forward of the windscreen. The floor (using the Italeri 15cwt floor as a pattern) and resesses for the legs are all scratch built using evergreen plastic and the floor then overlaid with Aber PE 'tread' (LOL) plate. One area of the Tamiya Quad which is totally inaccurate is this front floor area so this is the main reason I rebuilt it.

the chassis rails I made from Italeri GMC ones as these I had availiable in the spares box and they were the right size and shape in the front area. I just needed to narrow the rails slightly with a slope from just behind the cab to the ends and cut them to lenghth. Cross members were then added from the Italeri (Tomy) gun tractor kit and the GMC along with some scratch built items. I then decided to add the winch from the Italeri (Tomy) kit. this was altered to suit and while building this I used what I concidered to be the best detailed and accurate parts from all kits used. The chassis rails were then filled using magic sculpt.

Front springs are modified Tamiya GMC from the spares box. Rear are modified Tamiya Quad ones. Axles are Tamiya Quad centres and Italeri (Tomy) hubs with scratch brake drums.

The cab roof was made from 2 Italeri Chev 15cwt roofs as it is a totally different shape to the later 13 cab (Italeri) 15cwt one. I did not use the windscreen frame from the Tamiya Quad kit as I concidered it not to scale and too hard to 'free' from the original body. I have made a windscreen using clear evergreen sheet with strips glued around the edge to make it look a flimsy item which the original real one was. This will be fixed in the open position when it is time to do so.

Wheels are away getting molded now and these (unlike normal kit wheels) do no have a centre hub in them. The brake drums are true scale size and I have put the hub with the brake drum rather then the wheel. Wheels have directional pattern tread on them.

Back deck will be plastic sheet scribbed to look like boards. This will then have all the brass fittings etc fitted similar to the Maple leaf Chev one I have already done.

I am still thinking about adding the wiring and hoses to the motor as this will not be seen without leaving the Bonnet (hood) open and I probably will leave this closed.

The 'ROO' bar will be fitted to the front bumper and that is tie down straps that you can see and yes I am using the two front seats from the Italeri (Tomy) chev gun tractor kit.

plastic colors -
light brown beige - Tamiya Quad kit
bright green - Italeri (Tomy) gun tractor kit
black green - Italeri GMC kit
white - evergreen plastic strip and sheet.

thanks for your replys please keep them coming.
