Hello everyone,

I'm throwing this topic out there as a group build idea tentatively entitled "Anachronism".

An anachronism is something placed out of time, and that consists of the theme - a piece of equipment that should not be there. Distinctly inspired by the "Guns of the South" thread occurring in Figures forum, build topics could be:

  • Confederate soldier with an AK

  • some WW1 Storm Troops with M-16's
  • some 1944 Germans riding to battle in an FT-17 (well, maybe not)

  • Possibilities are pretty much endless, as long as the subject and the anachronism can be identified as not belonging together.

That's the thought - other thoughts?

Don't mean to rain on your parade, but isn't one of the reasons to do models and dioramas to show history as it was, as acurately as possible. I just don't see the point in mixing up elements and timelines to inaccurately portray history. I just don't get the point to it. Please explain the reasoning. It's just not my thing.

It's a whole "What If" kind of thing.

    Anachronism:

The representation of someone as existing or something as happening in other than chronological, proper, or historical order.

One that is out of its proper or chronological order, especially a person or practice that belongs to an earlier time: “A new age had plainly dawned, an age that made the institution of a segregated picnic seem an anachronism” (Henry Louis Gates, Jr.).

    HeavyArty,

I can't disagree that models and dioramas [i]can[/i be used for this purpose], but as you yourself state "one of the reasons" leaves many, many more options open (including this group build). The idea behind this is to have a fun exercise to break away from counting the bolts on a roadwheel or the rivets on a gunshield.

After all, participation is entirely voluntary, and the GB will only spin up with enough interest.

Not a personal attack, I just don't see the point in portraying something that is partially historically correct. Why do it? I myself am not a total rivet counter, if it looks right to me, it is good enough. If I know something is inaccurate and it is within my abalities, I will correct it. Like the Mighty Missouri ship dio that won the Masters' Trophy at TamiyaCon. It was awesome and the detail was amazing, however, it portrayed the USS Missouri taking part in the Doolittle Raid, which it wasn't even commissioned yet at that time. It was a what if dio, but I ask why? It would have been just as amazing if it had been historically correct with the proper aircraft flying around it for the time period. Maybe I am just too rigid in my modeling, but I just don't get the purpose. It just seems like a waste of effort to me.
