This is my contribution to the Overlord 2004 campain:

NBB - Naval Beach Brigade

This is what i have been able to collect from a number of sources, if there is any mistakes, plz. Don´t hesitate to correct me, it has been quite difficult to find much about this interesting part of the invasion.

Prior to the invasion it was realised by the Americans that it would be essential to have qualified personel on the beaches to direct not only the landingcrafts on the way to the beach, but also the heavy traffic of
personel and tanks on the US beaches.

With that backgrund the Naval Beach Brigade was formed and trained i England and consisted of personel from US Navy, The british had there own personel for the task - The Beach Command.

Beside being the "traffic cops" of the invasion, the NBBs also set up firstaid stations, communications and worked prior and during the invasion on
removing mines, obstacels and other difficulties.

So the NBBs were among the first on the beach.

They were equiped more or less like the average G.I. but with 3 main differences:

1) the recived paratropers boots prior to the invasion, since they were better at keeping sand from the surf out than the normal gaiters.

2) each member painted special markings on his helmet - shoving his unit and aiding him not being taken for a German. Some had painted or printed "USN" on there backs, mostly i white - some in black.

3) They had the navy wetgear.

They were also armed like the G.I.s - but some also had the Springfield, and no heavy weapons like machineguns or mortars.

My dio shows 4 G.I.s preparing to move inland, while 2 NBB´s takes cover on the beach and directing landingcrafts over the "walkie talkie". The base is
cut out from MDF and the sand is a mixture of real beachsand (not from Normandy though...) and diluted white glue. The concrete wall is made from strips of balsawood and the tall grass is a worn out old paintbrush.

I thought about some casualties on the beach, but first i ran out of space on the base and didn´t wanted it too cluttered, secondly the idea don´t really apeal to me.

Everything looks great but why is there a Sherman wheel buried in the sand? If these guys came onshore first and most of the Shermie DDs were having trouble getting to the beach would there be a wheel there so early in the battle?

Arrghhn. Darn!

Artistic licens perhaps :-) ....dOh!

No, the DD blew up so hard that one roadwheel flew trough the air and landed far up shore ... ok, its pretty thin i admit...

The boots of your two beach patrol guys don't look right. They too should have the cloth part on the upper area just like the 4 other troops. That is what is molded on the figures anyways.

MOX:
great idea. I was poking around on this for a 120MM figure conversion earlier this year. Member BPRSU sent me some great photos and plates on these guys. It wasn't unual (from what I can tell) for the Navy guys to wear one-piece coveralls. They also had a gray band painted on the helmet to varying degrees of neatness. There's a good -- a fairly common-- photo of two Navy guys with a Goliath that I think shows the band on the helmet.

After do a little research, I decided it's going to be eaiser to do an Army obstacle clearing team than a Navy one. I have't thought about this project for a month or two, but maybe one day....

Anyway, I think you did a nice job and picked a fascianting subject that is often overlooked (just like the USCG guys at Normandy). If you still can, you might want to add a few shadows/highlights to the boots, the look a little monotone.

Glad to see this dio!

HeavyArty: The NBB was equiped with paratroopers boots, as stated in the text.

PorkChop: Thx, it might be the quality of the pics, but there is infact a gray/blue band around there helmets, you should be able to see it on the second last pic.

Very nice, I like it. I don't know if this is a trick of lighting, or maybe you planned it, but the two guys in back, at the wall, look like their jackets are darker green, like they were wet. If you planned it this way, and why wouldn't you admit to that, then I think it's a nice detail.

If nothing else I think looking at your dio tells me how to put those Tamiya barricades together. For some reason I just couldn't visualize how they went together and mine don't look right. I think I see the trick now.

nice diorama.i liked everything here, just a lil comment : it seems you used pure beach sand as the ground.IMHO it could be better if you painted some and weather the ground.
best regards

Great idea, unusuall subject and well executed. This one really hits the guts of the Overlord campaign, what could be better than 'first on the beach'

its a nice lil scene there , and with some of the presaid corrections it could even be better . i d also have a notice on the plant bunches (like brush hair) that seem to me a lil uniform fitted and stiff, they could take some loosening up . Nice effort there

Thx for your kind replys and all the very relevant suggestions, i would like to:
1) work on those boots
2) shade the sand in the depressions to get a more uneven effect
3) do some more work on the tall grass

But i´m not sure i´ll have the time before completion of campain, so i´ll propably just leave as it is.

The sun is shining, the garden needs attention, the kids want to play with there old daddy and FarCry steals my evenings .... :-)
