Hi all,

I've started with my entry for the Mud, Sweat and Gears campaign. I'm building the AFV club Vietnam M88. Here are some pics:

the parts...

OMG what kind of site is that ?!?! :-)

first of all, the wheels

...and more wheels...

and today's results....running gear (I believe you call it that in English) is done, and so are the wheels.

All progress can be found on my site:

Looks like a serious challenge.

Are the black parts the tracks? Man.. single piece tracks and a zillion roadwheels... good luck!!

keep us updated on the progress. I never saw an m88 before and it looks interesting to build, except for the tracks... :-)

yep, those black things are the tracks..... :-)

It is quite a challenge not only because of the many parts etc, but also because this will be the 3rd model I'll paint by airbrush, so that's still pretty new to me too. And as this will not be an easy model to paint....

However, I like challenges, and I like to improve my skills, so this will be a very interesting build for me!

Thanks for the replies so far. I hope to have some more interesting pics with a good idea of how the model looks next week!

Greetings,
Martin

Looks great so far! I've got the M88A1 version planned for build after my Humvee for "Move It" and a couple of LA Class Fast Attacks for the DDD Campaign. I'll be very interested in your progress. I've hesitated to sign up until I get done with what's already in progress, but I've wanted to build that one for some time.

(That's really the dirty little secret about these campaigns, isn't it? This way we're given some deadlines to actually finish kits instead of stockpiling them! :-) )

Martin, Looks good to me,Keep up the good work.
Just how good is the afv M88 as a kit because after my experience with their M548A1 I'm not sure I fancy another AFV kit.

Mostly the kit is good. The fit is no problem.
The A-frame on mines had large holes that had to be filled (short-shots at the joints) and the light protection guards are so fine they are impossible to remove from the sprue without breaking. These were my biggest complaints.
Its a fine kit though ... great and loads of detail.

Good luck with the build martin!

That's one of the reasons why I join them, otherwise all of my kit's end up half finished or on stock :-)

Once I'm finished, I'll tell you everything you want to know about this kit.

Thanks, I'll pay more attention to these points!

One thing I saw already is that I had to remove a lot of thin plastic from the parts (you probably know what I mean by this) which I hadn't expected from such a expensive kit....

But anyway, wasn't too much work!

Greetings and thanks again for the replies!

Update!

Today, 12 januar, I was hoping to make some good progress....

I did, untill I had to assemble the lower hull to the upper hull. This turned out to be a hard job, especially because I'd made the mistake of glueing the front armor first on the lower hull after which I wanted to glue the upper hull on to it, which didn't worked.

After 30 minutes of trying, failing, shouting and trying again, the hull finally fitted.....after which I found out I made a mistake with the lifting arm that made I had to remove the upper hull again.

While removing the upper hull, I had to damage parts of the lifting arm, which isn't fully working now anymore. I can fix it, but hell, what a bad modelling evening!

I hope I make myself a little clear in English...don't know all the words haha (e.g lifting arm...do you know what I mean?)

Well, here are some pics of tonights results...

Upper and lower hull for the first time together

These parts make sure it'll be a recovery vehicle!

This pic gives a good idea of how the tank will look once done!

That's it for now, thanks for looking!

What I forgot to say:

The upper and lower hull had some fitting problems. I have them glued together again, this time wrapped in tape so the parts keep well together as the glue dries. I hope I get to see a good result once I'll remove the paint tommorow!

Anyway, you'll see new pics soon! Again any comments or questions are welcome!

Looking good. It appears to be a very clean build. Have you run into any problems with this build yet?

Yep, if you read my first post on this page, you'll know some of the problem I've encountered.....

Those problems are almost taken care off....just need to use some putty and clean up the mess I made and than I can continue.....I'll manage (at least I hope so)

Btw, what do you guys think of my new banner?

I will!

Tonight I'll give the M88 some putty and after that I'll clean it up, so I can continue the build. Hope to have the build itself finished before februar, as I've got no school in the first week of februar. I can paint it then!

One trick in this situation is to heat your knife blade & then cut -- the heat will cause it to slice easier without stress on the part.

Thanks, that's a very good idea!

Oh, yesterday I've used some putty after which I've cleaned up the model. Just got to sand the area with the putty again, after that I can continiue. Hopefully I can continue my build tommorow. I hope to finish the rear of the tank then...

Hi Pete,
have a look to my short "/review" in my personal page there :

http://olivier.carneau.free.fr/gb_version/index.htm select the kits and scroll down to the US section.

I posted some pics in the Rivet Review Board
https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/42459&page=1

hope the second link will operate !

Martin I guess you chose to use the AFV tracks set instead of those provided in the kit.
Enjoy the building

Well actually I wanted to use those which come with the kit because I can't keep spending money :-) I run out of it once hehe

Seems like the tracks in the box have a system to make track assemble easier, I'll post a pic of it later...

hey Martin. I found a build-review that might be helpful on Missing Links. Better late than never!
If you have some problems and need actual photographs of a certain area .. let me know as I have about 50 photos of this vehicle on file! Also have the AFV interior pictures!
