I used brown chalk pastels for the rust speading down and Testors rust on the nooks and crannies as you say. The whole thing was painted in gunshp grey enamel. Then I sprayed some on a spare styrene sheet. This is where I experimented brushing on (in no specific pattern) the white Tamiya acrylic for the whitewash before I actually done it in the tank itself.
