Hello all. Here are the early stages of my build. Although I'm adding detail I'm not trying to build a super-accurate representation of an actual aircraft - don't think I'd ever finish if I did that!
Had more or less finished the engine, hence the paint being applied. Then made the schoolboy error of browsing this site for 109 info, and found some great references. So I just had to do some more detailing! Starboard side is pretty much done, haven't started the port side yet. Pipes etc added with solder, fuse wire, foil, bits of styrene sheet and rod. Engine support frame is just dry-fitted for now.
More pics in my gallery. Constructive criticism and feedback would be very welcome, as ever. Thanks!

that engine looks nice, but a word of warning, i built one of these about ten years ago, if i remember correctly building the engine is one of the first steps, however i found i couldnt get it in the fusalage cos it was too big for the space allowed, on the other hand i was still a fairly inexperianced modeller back then, and that might not be a problem for you, as ive seen these kits built with the engine in

Thanks for the tip Phil. After putting this much work into the engine I will shoehorn it into the fuselage somehow! Have now nearly finished the port side, will post some more pics later

Hi Graham!
Good luck for your HUGE project! Looks good so far! Perhaps you could add some dark wash to blend the black and the aluminium a little bit more.

Yes, I'd done some of the painting then added a lot of the pipework etc. So I'll have to touch up all the paint, then I will apply some washes and finish off with a dry brush.

That's a very good question, the answer to which is - probably not to be honest! Maybe swmbo would like it as a centre-piece on the dining table? Or maybe not...
I plan to build it with the engine cowling removable, so most of the detail should still be visible

Detailing and paintwork now more or less complete, I think.
Next stage will be some washes to tie everything together and then some dry-brushing to finish. Then - the cockpit...

That is one HUGE BF 109 Graham. I am sort of halfway through the Revell 1:32 version to be used in a dio, crash landed in a field. Any change of something to compare the size in a photo?
As for displaying it, I had the same problem when I started my Cutty Sark. At a 1:75 scale the finished ship will be just over 4 foot long and about 2 foot high... SWMBO didn't see the funny side when I took a tape measure to the sideboard in the living room... :-) :-) But one day whilst doing some DIY it occured to me, the stairwell..
We are luky that our house was built in 1864, when high ceilings where all the rage . The ceilings are some 3 meters high, and in the kitchen, where the stairs are, previous owners have put in a false ceiling, creating a open space by the stairs which is perfect to hang my ship.
This is the view from the lower part of the stairs.
and this is where the stairs turn
Just a thought, models don't neccessarily need to go on a shelf..
Cheers
Henk

She would like nice hanging there, good idea. Also she will be well out of the way of curious/prying fingers! I've got a smilar problem with my model of Campanula ~ she's 1/72 and three feet long.
My Dad has a very nice display cabinet in his house that would, strangely enough, fit very nicely on our stairs, and would make a nice home for the ship. Have dropped several hints but no joy yet!
Cheers

Here's the engine with my 1/35 Kettenkrad to give you an idea of the size...

Well the engine is now finished, I think. Did some more washing and a touch of dry brushing before adding the support frames. Unfortunately had to take the photos under a flash so they aren't great - more in the gallery.
Critique welcome of course!

Just time for another quick update. Started on the cockpit, as you can imagine the old Airfix kit needs a LOT of work! I'm using the Fotocut PE set, cockpit and engine are dry fitted only in the pics, hence the gaps. Let me know what you think please...

Gradually working around the cockpit, instrument panel now taking shape. Still a bit to do here, knobs at end of control levers (for vents or something?) need shaping then painting white, various other bits of touch up needed. The photo doesn't actually do it justice, must get a camera with better macro facility

Now added the Revi gunsight and touched up a few other bits here and there...
