Hi, all! Here's my entry for the "Welcome to the 'Nam" campaign. It's the US Army Ford M151A2 Mutt in 1/35 scale by Academy. Please feel free to comment & criticize. I'll be happy to answer any questions as well. This is my first attempt at a vehicle in several years and I know it's nowhere near what it could be.

BTW, is there no official thread for this campaign?

That is one dirty well used Mutt. There probably hasn't been an official thread opened yet because there is over a year till the end of the campaign

Looks pretty good. A little too muddy for my tastes though. Couple pointers though. First off, not many, if any, M151A2 versions made it to Vietnam. The A2 version was not produced till '72 or '73, about the same time as the US drawdown began. The standard in Vietnam was the M151A1, as made by Academy. The snorkel and extended exhaust pipe were a USMC item, a few Army M1515A2s may have had them, but I have never seen them on one. Also, the markings, black US Army and #, are a post Vietnam style. During the Vietnam era and up till the late '70s, the markings were all in white and a white star would have most likely been on the hood as well. Tail lights look like they are orangs as well, should be red. The HMMWV mirror looks out of place on the snorkel too. Not a bad model, just not too accurate for a Vietnam MUTT. Good effort, a few corrections and it can be great.

Doesn't it end in April, Alan?

Thanks for all the comments, Gino.

Yeah, I went a bit overboard with the mud. I have just discovered acrylic powders which are great and am unable to restrain myself. A lot of it will fall off soon anyway.

The kit instructions claims the A2 entered service in '70, and I had this confirmed on this site in an earlier thread.

yeah, I know the snorkel's USMC. I had originally planned this for the Amphib campaign but was told "no snorkels or wading gear". My story now is that it's a Marine Mutt that was stolen by those naughty paratroopers :-)

Guess I'll have to do something about the star.

The taillights are red, but I think the dust makes it look orange.

That's not a Humvee mirror, Gino, it's from the nancy guntruck as I'd seen the pic below on Google, and the reg mirror doesn't work with the snorkel in the way.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, Gino.

You're right! I'm getting all my Campaigns mixed up. I was thinking of Halls of Montezuma. Anyway April is still over 6 months away. I think as the end comes closer there will be an official thread

One more thing on the mirror. If you look closely in the pic you posted, the mirror is not attched to the snorkel, there is a small rod that attaches to the body below the snorket that it is mounted on.

Couple pointers on the M151. The upright guard near the exhaust extension should have matching holes on both side and back. You might want to use a pin vise to open up the lightenming holes n the wheels and the unused lug holes on the spare tire. The snorkel has some mold lines at the top. Since you can see the firewall in front ot the driver very clearly, you might want to add gas, brake and clutch pedals. The gas pedal is a almost fully cloed inverted Y. The picture you show is the older version, not the one you modeled: Note the flat fender, small directional housing and split windshield as opposed to the model's parts.

nice kit you have there. Looks like its been sitting by the muddy road unused until all the dust settled onto it, even the seats!

Please dont take this as criticism but i personally prefer it slightly less dusty however if it had to be dusty, i would clear the seats to portray the jeep being used as dust do tend to get wiped off when passengers move about on the seats.

Thanks, Al, you're right about the holes. I'd noticed them, but I just don't have the gear to do that. Plus, not too sure if I've got the skills, either :-) ! As for the ref pic, I was just trying to show Gino the mirror, I have some better pix of the A2 model.

Jazza, yeah, I know the mud & dust's overdone. As I told Gino, a lot will probably fall off. The Mutt's eventually going on a convoy dio, and I will be adjusting the mud and dust to fit the terrain and the story line at that time.

Easiest way to do that is gety second MUTT, they're cheap and adictive enouogh to do this. Plan the second to not have that in place. Cut the two parts and joion them sides with holes together and sand any seam smooth.

A2s were manufactured since 1970 and a number of them made it to Vietnam in last years of conflict. Of course they were not as numerous as A1s, but they were there. These earliest A2s were slightly different from later production A2 (as depicted by Tamiya/Academy kit), but differences are hard to spot unless you know what to look at.

Even easier and cheaper would be to drill out the holes with the appropriate sized drill bits. Not really that difficult.

The Jeeps (never called them 'Mutts', just 'Jeep', ¼ ton or 'truck') we had in Germany had the small rectangular rearview mirrors. Some even had them on both sides. All of our trucks had hardtops and rearward vision was poor from the inside, especially when towing the omnipresent trailer with doghouse.

I just had another look at the Mutt (oops Jeep) last night, and realized that the pix seem to show the mud/dust much more than in actual fact. I think the acrylic powder probably reflected the light a lot more strongly than expected. Also, some of the stuff's already fallen off.

G'day mate
very nice, a good contribution to the campaign.
Not too dirty in my opinion, ive seen cars here filthier than that, and they have access to a hose!
So considering its in country, and especially in the dust and muddy environment of Vietnam, i think it looks good.
Cheers

Thanks, David. I know a lot of the others thought I'd overdone the mud/dust (and I was beginning to think so too), but I was having another look through Tim Page's "Vietnam" and David Bowman's "The Vietnam Experience" and there are some vehicles in there with a lot more on them.
