Hi,

My next model will be a german tank with a desert scheme.... still constructing it....in the mean time I took one of my earlier model that I built and re-paint for practice purpose....got the base coat done...will start the weathering process soon....it looks sandy color but in the photos below, it looks almost white...I guess it must be lighting...

I am looking for suggestion on how to weather a desert vehicle....

1) Can I use still use ram umber for wash....and filter ??? What is the best color for wash and filter for a desert scheme vehicle ?

2) For scratching and chipped paint...what is the best color to use ? Is it dark grey ???

Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks in advance....

Looks very nice.
Yes you can use Raw Umber, and also you can use dark grey for the chipped effect.

Very nice, I want to see the results

Okay, this, as opposed to your T-55 above, I WOULD chip up. I like a very dark brown. You can add ultra thin scratches with fuse wire and burnt sienna oil paint, and very lightly streak it down with a large brush. If done right it looks very convincing. You can also go old school and dust it up with your airbrush a bit, and finish it off with pastels or concrete coloring.

Applied the raw umber filter and also the pin wash....the model looks darker ...as expected...

Next week going to try the paint chipping and scratches...tha's my most nerve wrecking steps of weathering for me...always end up getting the scale of the chip paint and scratches wrong for 1/35.....usually too big...and sometimes the shape just does not look right..... and all the previous effort of construction, filter, pin wash wasted....going to try the fuse wire technique suggested by 18Bravo....

Anyway, the pictures below are the before and after wash....

Somehow, I am starting to use Rivet Review board as my little diary ....

Looks very nice. Good luck with the chips.
Also, are you going to weather up the tracks???
The decals looks fine also. Very nice.

Nice work, you before and after pics is a textbook example on the effect of washes - nice!

If its not too late i would take a pointed knife and open those drivers periscopes a bit - to get them more even - maybe even make some inserts.

Remember to paint the headligths

Looking better by the picture!
Is it the lighting or does the gun mantle cover need painting?

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice for all the previous posting and those who PM me to help....

I check around and for tiran 5, the gun mantle seems to be same color as the main vehicle body...

I managed to find some quiet time on Saturady evening.... after after many correction, I only manages to scratches some small detail in ..I believe the brush I have is not suitable for scratches or paint chips...

Oh..well.....I got burn out after 1 hour of chipping paint... need to find a way to overcome this mental block that I have for paint chipping and scratching....

Guess I need to take a week or 2 week break from modelling and hopefully recover to find enough engry to paint the head light and shape up the periscope....and also continue on my Stug III and also get ready for the Russian Group build organise by Steve .....

Weather in Singapore has been pretty nice lately...maybe I will go fishing, swiming or scuba diving during the weekend.....

Oh yes...the scratches...and chip paint are barely visible in this posting...oh well....gone fishing.....

Hi Mike
You did a wonderful job on the wash and weather. I like the very subtle weathered look. Its a good thing that the chipping is not overdone. You can store the model as it is. Or you can
- add few streaks over the markings and the side of the turret
- do a bit more with pastels on the tracks, Barrel and the rear stowage bin.
- oil stains and
- Some dry brushing on the tracks to simulate bare metal
- and
- and
As I said earlier you can store the model as it is or.....
OK Happy fishing
