Can anyone help me out with which units used Ram II OP's in the NWE campaign?
Thanks in advance for any advice or help.

Cheers

Ram OPs would have been used by the Sexton SP units, so we're talking:
11 Army Field in 1 cdn AGRA
19 Army Field in 1 Cdn AGRA
23 Field in 4 Div
8 Field in 5 Div

Ram OPs were also used as Command Post vehicles and there is at least two photos of two different ones in Holland used by the South Albertas. The CP version was different only in that is was used by the Armoured Corps and not the Arty.

If the SAR use was indicative, then you might find them in either of the Canadian Amoured Regiments in NW Europe. I'm not sure that the units in Italy would have had them there or if they would have received them when they went to Holland in 1945. Again, I do know they were used by Armoured regiments, I just can't say for sure which ones, other than the SARs.

Hope this helps.

Looking to build a Formations kit, are we??? :-)

Hi there Bear,

Yep. Looks a must for me.
All we need now is a good 1/35th Sexton, preferably in plastic.
Anybody listening?

Cheers

Well if you look at the Formations page 23 of their catolog and you see the firefly turret that is posted there..you'll notice it says first cooperation between Formations and Fabio Sacchi...I know he is working on a Sexton kit so it might be a future release from Formation...let's keep out fingers crossed .

Hey I finally found this thread. So, would any of Ultracasts Canadian AFV decals be appropriate for the Formations Ram II OP that I pre-ordered?

Could be, what have you got? Ultracast's stuff is for armoured regiments, so a pure Arty OP is out unless you have other Arty decals. If you have the South Alberta set, then It's OK as is and there is proof of the Ram being used.

If you have the sheet for the Hussars, the Grenadier Guards or the BCR, then the formation signs are OK (green square) but the tac signs will have to be replaced with the same number on a red square. Now, the use of the RAM CP (OP) in these units is not confirmed but is certainly possible, even probable.

The turret tactical symbol for a Ram in any of these units would have been the square, which was the HQ squadron symbol.

HTH and feel free to ask about anythign I was unclear about.

Hi Paul. Did you do a major overhaul of the resin S models Ram a few years back?

Would it be possible to combine the formations release and the S-model kit to get a decent ram withought too much trouble?

Well, I detailed the S-Model kit and was in the middle of a serious overhaul of the Resicast Ram with an S-Model turret to get my own OP.

That said, why would you want to do anything with the S-Model kit? Without measuring to be absolutely sure, it appears that there is nothing on the S-Model kit that is not vastly superceded by Robs beauty. If you want a gun tank with the aux. turret, then you have a lot of work ahead of you, but still much less if you start with a Formations OP and an Academy Lee than if you start with the S-Model Ram and the Tamiya Lee. If you happen to have an S-Model Ram laying about, then you can possibly save a bit of time by cutting out the corner of the S-Model kit that has the Aux turret and grafting it into the Formations kit, but I'd be careful about htat because most of the S-Models kit is ill proportioned and it still requires a Lee aux turret, which must eb modified to represent a Ram.

Rob has said that he has considered a gun tank but didn't think he would make on e soon as he didn't figure that he'd move many. This was a day after he announced the kit. In another message a couple days later he stated that he was getting swamped with orders, so he might be reconsidering the timing of such a kit (I hope so).

To my small and feeble mind, the Ram has always seemed to be one of those AFVs that had a following, especially amongst Canadians, but also amongst others of the Commonwealth AFV persuasion. Never enough for a styrene kit, but, I always thought, if a really good resin Ram appeared, it would sell really well for a resin kit. I might have been right...
