Greetings,
This is really one for the Canadian Contingent. Does any one know which turret symbols were allocated to the Squadrons in the Fort Garry Horse on D Day?
ie:
HQ - Diamond?
A Sqn - Triangle?
B Sqn - Square?
C Sqn - Round?
Thanks
Al

Al,
You are right on track.
They should be standard markings for all commonwealth units.
The colours of the markings are a different story. They are based on the seniority of the Regiment within the 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade.
Squadron marking colours for the units were as follows:
1st Hussars-Red-Senior
Fort Garry Horse-Yellow-Second Senior
Sherbrook Fusiliers-Blue-Junior
To answer the specifics of your question A,B,and C Squadrons of the Fort Garry Horse landed on D-Day equipped with Sherman DDs.
All Squadrons were launched about 1000 metres off shore. A and B Squadrons had a very short swim before the tracks touched the bottom. C Squadron had their tanks shelled on the swim in and lost four in the water. An LCT was also hit and could not initially launch its tanks. C Squadron hit the beach with 14 of its 20 tanks.

Hi Jason
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've been in touch with the FGH Museum and they have kindly sent me a lot of information that pretty much answers my original question.
I'm putting it on to a spreadsheet at the moment and I will PM you when it's done if you want a copy.
Many thanks
Al
