hey
the cold snap has given time to work on my models over the last couple of weeks so heres another installment of my sturmtiger build,i still have to add the tools, crane and do a MATT varinsh.then i can put it on a base.
i have applied the decals dragon sent out to me.how will i seal pastels or weathering '' dust '' on the model without taking it off when putting on the gloss coat or matt varish.i have also make fuel stains around the engine door/hatch and hav applied '' sludge wash '' for the first time which worked out real well for me.the base i want to out it on is a picture frame surround with a cobble stone street that it will be siting on with maybe the " Tamiya maintenance crew " looking at the engine.

Hi Matt I see this kit is coming together ...I see you guys are getting a lot of snow ...Now you know how we feel every winter.... :-) One thing I noticed is the red fire extinguisher ...it didn't happen ...just either paint it the base color and you'll be fine ...Keep the pictures coming.

Matt:
Nice looking sturmtiger. Camo looks great. How was this kit to build? I've always wanted to build a sturmtiger and notice that there is only 2 kits in 1/35 (Italeri and Tamiya). Maybe it will be Dragons secret item :-) :-)
Post some more pics when u start weathering

Matt, your model is coming along very nicely. I might suggest doing a little bit of dry brushing, but that's just personal preference. What method did you use to paint the hard-edged camo?

How was this kit to build?
the build was a nice and easy one,i think it would be a great cut-a-way tanki to do because it comes with a interor and all the after market stuff out there for it,i did i cut-a-way on it but on cut out the roof and made a few scratchbuilt items.

il change that right away.

i brush painted it all using a fine brush and a steady hand,i used blue-tak to mask some areas but found the paint builds up a little around the edge of the blue-tak

Weren't you going to do a cutaway version of this?
I best get back to working on my perennial Sturmtiger project.

they are expensife, but i find its worth it. I usualy can build an oob model in 2-3 days for construction where as the am sets extend this period greatly. Comes in handy when you figure you slapped a 60$ tiger together in an instant.
iam working on the engine, trying to figure how to accuratly set the hull mg in place with the pe... finished the shell loader pe, radio, guage... but everything needs paint... that will come later
If you would have liked a nice pe set lion roar makes a nice tiger exterior one for 10$ shipping included from luckymodels.com

Pastels would definitely lessen when you apply gloss or matt varnish. My suggestion would be to just apply a little bit more than what you want before applying the coat. That's what I normally do and it worked fine for me.
Cheers

Hi Frank
I used the kit ( Italeri) supplied zimmerit took a few pieces out of it etc.
I like the kit myself it isn't perfect. I am intending to get another one Italeri that is. It also appears that Italeri have removed this one from their catalogue.
I also have a Tamiya Sturmtiger to build.
I just love these Sturmtigers.
Regards

this model that i have done i would call a model because i have done washes, gloss coats , have taken my time and done some research on it,sadly im thinking about dropping out of models for while because they cost quite a bit over here and im getting a car and girls and all that so im finding i dont have the time or money to keep on going so im thinking the sd.kfz251 will be my last.but its only a thought for now.

Hi Matt
Hang in there buddy.
Yes it can be an expensive hobby if you want it to be. I personally put a limit of $40.00 max. for each kitset. I don't add photoetch, resin add ons or aftermarket tracks. So thats my work around. I have a young family and money is a bit tight from time to time. I still have lots of fun on that budget.
I know when I was thirteen to fourteen I gave up for similar reasons to you more just time and interests moving on rather than lack of funds. Plus my skill levels just did not match those shown in magazines (they still don't) . So instead of inspiring me the workmanship kinda intimidated or depressed me. In fact it still does from time to time. Plus I guess I struggled with what my peers/friends and potential girlfriend/s might think of my hobby.
But I have been through both the car and woman thing got to the otherside and returned to the hobby. I never threw my modelling stuff away and transported it from house to house city to city as I moved around. Hell I still have Humbrol enamel paint from circa 1978 at home its naturally unusable.
At the end of the day think long and hard its your decision maybe take a break but keep your modelling stuff. I know until lately my modelling had stalled as I struggled with my Sturmtiger but I have hung in there and had a recent injection of enthusiasm.
I personally would miss you around here.
Regards
Sean

the varnish i did on it took away most of the weathering and finshed more in a gloss coat than a matt finish,is there a way to fix this, maybe i didnt stir the varnish very good because it is very hard to mix the liquid on top with the thick stuff on the bottom of the tinlet,(i am using humbrol 49)

Hi Matt. The Sturmtiger is looking good. I like your camo, and when weathered up a little, this will definately look the part.
As Richard has pointed out the red extinguisher, the only other thing to nit-pick is the bullet-hole damage on the side fenders. Nothing to do with the fact the holes are there, but more that they appear to be only there! It would nearly be impossible to only hit such a large vehicle evenly along the same line on both sides. Add some more, similar sized damage (but not deep) on the structure side with the point of your knife and paint inwards .... undercote, metal, black. You wont need to many but a few would take away from the "designer" appearance on the fenders.
Theres nothing wrong with modelling on a budget .... throwing lots of money at a kit, doesnŽt make you a better modeller. Concentrate on your painting and weathering skills ... thats where a plain model can really look a stunner.
Regarding those tinlets of humbrol matt varnish ... they are rubbish. Even if you take the time to thoroughlly stir the mix, youŽll still get a gloss finish or patches of gloss. Their little bottle of matt is much better. Model master have a great matt as well, but it keeps clumping on me.
