Im working on AFV Club's Centurion and have just added the mantlet cover.
I made the surround from lead foil and the remainder is milliput , comments and constructive critisism welcome as allways.

Ian that is really well done! It looks really realistic so far.
Im guessing you used something like super glue to stick the lead foil onto the mantlet? Im actually trying to see a little closer to see which parts are filled with the milliput but cant differentiate it from the lead foil. Any chance you would have more progress shots?

Hi Jeremy
Unfortunately I dont have "work in progress " shots ,my brother had borrowed my camera and I just got it back :-)
But you did guess correctly , lead foil was used around the borders as I needed to replicate the "press-studs" (for want of a better word )that attaches the cover to the mantlet.
I cut some thin strips of foil and marked these to correspond with the indentations on the existing mantlet , I then pressed a thin drill bit to create the "press-studs".
These strips where then attached with super glue then I built up thin layers of milliput blending this in with the lead foil with a wet paintbrush and at the same time tried to replicate folds and creases in the "canvas".

That is effective Ian, looking at photos of the real thing I find it hard to see anything to criticise.
With all the talk about Crusaders, Centaurs, Cromwells and Centurions on Armorama, I think my Tiger will be my last German AFV project for a while. Roll on the British A series.

Thanks guys , I must admit I was pretty pleased with it :-) , it was my first attempt at sculpting with milliput , I guess all that time messing with plastacine as a little kid finally paid off
