guys
hope you like my cromwell
the plastic hull was soaked in white spirit to get the white stains and the green and dirt was dry burshed on
I used humbrol paints and hand painted the Irish Guard Armoured markings. Ive been told we never had cromwells but im sure we used them on the arnhem run but im not sure so i did it in the markings anyway.
The yellow triangle should be blue which ill have to change
The kit was real easy to build and went together well
ill get another one some time i think
regards andrew

Hi Andrew,

Nice looking build there, good looking weathering and a great overall finish.

Only observation would be that the 'Micks' didn't have any Cromwells. The Welsh Guards did.

2nd Bn IG (Armd) were equipted with Sherman Mk V's and Firefly VC's plus some Firefly Hybrib Ic's and M4 Fireflies near the end.

If you have any informaion on them having some Cromwells I'd be really interested to know.

I have a complete listing of all the 2nd Battalions tanks and vehicles if you'd like a copy just PM me you email address.

Otherwise a very nice kit. If you change the markings to those of the Welsh Guards you'll have a great kit there. Don't forget to add soem antenna.

Cheers

Al

8th Kings Royal Irish Haussars had then in Normandy as armoured recce
the same markings that can be made up in the kit with 7th Armoured Div

Hi Andrew,

Decals are always a pain, sorting out the units, divisions and who had what is not always easy. You're correct the units issued with Cromwells were Armoured Recce Units.

Either the 8th Kings or the Welsh Guards should be fine.

Will you be adding any stowage or crew, or is she a stand alone kit? You mentioned Arnhem, the Welsh Gurds were there too to the best of my knowledge, but check first LOL, LOL

Cheers

Apart from the marking problems (hate that too), great job overall ! I especially like the effect achieved by the white spirit technique, it looks mighty interesting!
Congrats on a job well done!

Have to agree here! This is the type of finish I would be after for a burnt out tank... But with more charredness(?) which I'm sure could be added later... Could you explain the technique a little more?
Due to the state of the tank, I'd recommend doing some more weathering on the tracks, which at this stage look a little clean...
Great finish
Cheers

Thanks guys
Ill be adding in a crew sometime
i could buy some nice resin ones but i think ill sculpt my own

The white spirit method is easy,
first get a plastic container.
i use chinese takeaway containers and fill it with enough white spirit to cover the hull as you do the hull first then the turret
remove the tracks from a hull (as white spirit damages them )
the hull needs to have been glued together for a couple of days at least,
as white spirit can loosen a few of the smaller parts and you will have to reglue them on.
Leave the unpainted glued up hull or turret in the white spirit for a while
about 10 min at a time
and when you take it out as the white spirit dries random white blotches will appear
i repeated the process a few times and let it all dry
Ive only ever done this with a black plastic kit
then i dry brushed on green and a variety of beiges and browns to make it look like some tank riders had been climbing on the rear
I havnt done anything with the tracks yet but will weather and rust them up a bit like my whatif german tank tracks on an earlier post
and ill be repainting the markings to The 8th Kings Royal Irish Haussars
hope this helps
regards andrew
