A while ago, me and my good bud Tank46, Butch Cassidy decided to do a small group build thingy for Nashorn. Butch is an expert on small "Eye Killing Scale" tanks, so he is doing one in 1/87, and my eyes ain't so good, so I am doing the regular one. Here you go!

In Butch's own words of description of the project: Quote:

Now about the kit: The model is from Military Depot in 1/87th scale from the Ukraine I believe. It is a resin model with PE and resin parts. It also came with a metal gun barrel. I brought the kit from Paul Heiser, Inc. from Cal. Paul also included a sheet of resin parts that were better than the P.E. parts. All told there are over 50 parts in this piece. The upper hull structure including the rear door was all PE. I added a muzzle break from a Roco Tiger 1 because I didn't like the brake that came with it. The MG42 is also from Roco (actually a M60) but close enough with a plastic mount from Paul Heiser. I added the control wheels to the gun mount and the commanders seat. The floor is aluminum foil rolled over a knurled xacto knife handle then painted and weathered. The primer coat was humbrol matt light gray. the base coat was Polly scale Panzer Dark yellow 2 coats and the camo was Polly scale Panzer Olive Green. The tracks were a 70/30 mix of Humbrol matt oxford blue and matt black. Then a wash of Tamiya Nato brown and Isopropyl Alcohol. Finally a dry brushing with Humbrol matt aluminum. After a gloss coat a dark brown wash was conducted. Then drybrushing with brown pencil and lead shavings. A pastel brushing with a dark umber and a dark earth then sprayed with acetone and then a dull coat. Decals were by TL, Inc. The whole process took approx. 24 hours.

Unquote

I like Cassidy's work, it's amazing how detail he can get with such small scale.

Now it's my Nashorn.... This is the first DML German kit, the old Nashorn. I had upgraded it with Commander Resin, Eduard PE, Judio Barrel, Some Styrenne stripes, Periscopes from TWS Tiger Interior leftover, Aber Wingnuts, Tamiya brass shells.

The old Nashorn is a nightmare, even with the excellent Commander upgrade set, the fitting is not good, a lot of putty was used. And I finally gave up and used a Flag to cover a gap at the right side armor plate.

Here you go, any comments are greatly appreciated.

Excellent Job!!! :-)
I am happy that you used so much AM stuff, especially PE although it does not rival the PE work on my Panzer 1
Sorry
GREAT Job buddy,

Of all the pieces of German armor, thier TDs are my favorite. With that said, you did a wonderful job on your Nashorn!
I really like your attention to detail, the spent shells, flag, and the bent fender add a nice touch of life to the vehicle.
Keep up the great work!

Dave you have truly given an old dog new life. Great work. Butch's kit is amazing as well. I could never do such an intricate camo pattern on such a small vehicle. Great work both of you.

Cool Deal, I'm glad you took pictures of the Baby, I'd be strainin' my eyeballs tryin'.

I had the same difficulties you did, Putty, sand, putty , sand and sand some more until it looked about right, replace fittings and tie downs. I also cheated and made a partial canvas roof to hide the ugliness.Sort of takes your eye off of it.

Most excellent weathering and washing, I like the tweaked front fender too. What no spare track front armor upgrade? Those foolhardy Germans. Hehehe :-)

Great Job oh great Swine, You need to put it in a scene, it cries out for one. Oink squeal Oink

Excellent.

Love the tiny one, you're right it is amazing what detail there is for the size.

The big one is lovely, especially the detail on the gun. Love the spent casings. I really do have some work to do to get to these standards.

Hi Dave,

I really like your work, like said before your eye for detail brings it alive.

I have question: your spent shells look about the most convincing one I have ever seen, how did you get the color difference, I see a hint of bleu giving a real impression of heated metal (or is that just the picture?)

Thanks Faust, Favor, and Road for your compliments. The picture did a lot good to the actual model....

The spent shells I used Tamiya brass shell, and just spraying flat black on them. I turn the air pressure real low, so it kinda spit out paints. Normally it's not what you want, but in this case, the black color is more randomly "spit" out and kinda resemble the randomness of burnt gun powder residue. HTH.

Hi Jeff,

The Resin upgrade I got is from Cammanders Models. It comes with the front glacis part which corrects the wrong angle, rivet misplacement of the plastic kit. the Gunshields, the Grills for the side wall. . Lifting Hooks, Round Stowage, the Jack, and jack block. I cannot remember exactly how much, but was not expensive, something like 20 to 30 bucks. The guy's email address is [email protected] he is really nice and helpful.

There are also a Modelkasten upgrade set out there which will cost about USD 120 to 150, with the tracks, the main thing is to bring the detailed level of the 88 gun up.

I think some nice Friultracks will definitely make a big difference.

HTH.

Jeff--The resin update is from Commander's Series Models and is around $20. How do I know this you ask? Well because I am the one who bought it and sent it to Dave. Ted Paris (the guy who is behind CSM) is a really nice guy and makes some nice stuff. The prices on his website are not quite right. He charges either 10 or 15 percent less than the price on the site (don't ask me why he just doesn't update his site). He is a very helpful guy and very generous as well. I ordered the Nashorn update, Sherman interior, and SU-76 update from him and then a few weeks later order 4 other items and in that box he included a 5th item that he knew that I would like (due to our conversations) for free. This is nice in and of itself, but when you realize that the item he gave me for free would retail for close to $60 it begins to sound even nicer considering that all told I didn't spend more the $200 between both of those orders. If you want CSM stuff, I would suggest you go straight to Ted (by using the link above) so that you don't have to pay the fee that vendors tack on to his price.

Davidus the Smart Soldier,

You have done a great job on the old DML Nashorn. I like the Tamiya shells and you have sprayed them as they have just been used. Keep it up Dave, I think you are gonna make the New Nashorn as good as this old one.

Hello everyone. First I want to thank my partner Dave for taking the time to pick a subject interesting to the both of us. I really enjoyed building the Nashorn within the parameters we set for the build especially not knowing how either of ours would come out. I thank all you who responded to the post and appreciate all your comments. Finally, Dave your Nashorn is awesome. Your weathering is excellent and the spent cartridge casings are the best I have ever seen. I was trying to think of a way to include some ready ammunition myself but could not figure out how to scratchbuild them with any accuracy. I must say though that just building it and seeing both finished projects really gives me a sense of accomplishment. This site and its membership is the greatest! Butch Cassidy Tanks46.

Ok....I love it!
All kidding aside......I noticed that you forgot a rivet on the bottom of the hull...Strike one! Next, I noticed that you also positioned the flugelhiem to far to the left ( when you fix this, please point out what a flugelhiem is)....strike two! Then the transmissionwas examined thouroughly and I noticed you put 40 wieght oil in there, when it was clear that at the time of this vehicle, 37.23 wieght was clearly the only available oil....thats strike three! You are now listed as a subversant and a clear choice for re-education! My, how little you cared about us, the little people. No! Not leprechauns.......your underlings....your lackies...your minions! If it weren't for the fans, where would you be? Without the constant guidance of the "people", would you be who you are today? Where the hell am I going with this? Who is that at my window? Am I alone?......I need electro-shock agin, don't I? Sorry.....
