Hi;
I'm building a Canadian Mk 11 LR Centurion from the AFV club kit and I'm trying to be as accurate as I can with the TC's .50 cal MG. I'm also going to tackle a Lynx and M-113 someday so I'm trying to find out what 'version' of the .50 cal was used in the 60's and 70's. Also the ammo cans - what did they look like? Where they WWII vintage or a more modern 'NATO' version? I have the ABER .50 cal boxes set and the Eduard ones are coming, but I've come to realize that the ABER ones are WWII and the Eduard boxes are WWII, Vietnam or 'Modern'. Which ones would I use? As far as the .50 cal itself is concerned, I think probably any one would do (I have a Skybow one I'm going to use) but were there subtle differences over the years in Canadian service?

thanks in adavance....

I'll probably be called on this, but as far as I know there are no differences specific to Canadian M2HBs. Ammo cans would be appropriate for the period. In the 60s there might have been a few WW II cans left over, but certainly by the 70s+ it was all the more modern style hinged on the narrow side.

Some installations might have the flash surpressor fitted but most would not.

Bob,

The .50 on the Centurion Mk.11 was a standard machine gun, in a standard mount and cradle except for one addition.

The sight on the .50 was replaced with a circular ring sight so that aircraft could also be engaged. The sight was the same kind as attached to the .50 mount on the Lynx.

The .50 on the Lynx is a standard HMG too....except....before the NODLR mount was attached the belt feed was from the right. Therefore the ammo box cradle and ammo box were fitted to the right side of the mount. After the NODLR mount was attached the feed changed over to the left side. Just be aware for the time period you build your Lynx in and use lots of good reference material.

The ammo cans as Paul said should be the modern type.

The only flash suppressors I saw were on the Lynx.

A little slow at the moment Jason....I've been tasked by SWMBO to take care of some thing on the "honey-do" list.

I did manage to finish the grab handles and all of the workable clasps on the toolboxes and turret bins that come with the Voyager PE set and they really look great. I'm got to add a few bits to the turret yet and then maybe get a coat of paint on this week. I've just about finished the TC's .50 cal with the Eduard zoom ammo box added on. The Voyager resin mantlet cover is a gem but unfortunatley, they didn't take into account the searchlight mounting rail so I'm dealing with that as well. I've got a groove filed into the top of the mantlet that the rail fits into and I'll whip up some milliput I think to fair in the effect of cover over top of it maybe this weekend. Slow but sure, thanks for asking. Maybe some WIP pics coming up....

When's your Centurion going to be published in MMI?....that's one issue I'm going to pick up from Small Soldiers for sure.

Thanks for the update Bob, it sounds great.

My Canadian Centurion Mk.11LR article is with AFV Modeller magazine...they also have my Canadian M109A4+ article and my article on a Canadian KFOR Leopard C1 with MEXAS.....no idea on a time line for publishing of any of them.
