Thunder Model is working on a British BL 7.2 inch howitzer

The BL 7.2-inch howitzer was a heavy artillery piece used by the British Army throughout World War II.

It formed parts of "Heavy" regiments of Army Group Royal Artillery units, providing heavy fire support for British and Commonwealth troops.

This howitzer was towed usually by the Scammell tractor, which is available from Thunder Model as well

For some time,I've quite fancied a tribute to Spike Milligan, who served with 56th Heavy Artillery in N Africa and Italy. A 7.2 plus tractor would be just the job. I have the tractor already and they thoughtfully included a 56th marking scheme!

As I recall, it was after one 7.2” in his unit ran away over a tent that he met fellow Goon Michael Bentine.

I’m sure you’re correct about it being Secombe - it was ages ago that I read about it and lots of stuff has tried to find space in my brain since then!

Have any of these (Mks I-V, as per the kit) survived on the original carriage? Duxford has one but it's on the American M1 carriage.

I’m pretty sure I photographed one at the Woolwich Rotunda years (decades actually!) ago - not seen any others though.

The thing I really love in the books, is when he gets sent over to Sicily. He sends a letter to his mum saying "Dear Mum, we've been moved again. I'm not allowed to say where. We had spaghetti for lunch." Brilliant!
