Some waterslide decals I've used on aircraft where you have odd surfaces will conform well to the imperfections while others form tiny "parachutes." Field modifications are common in combat, and with the Jerries on the run at the end, a late war dio would be perfect for a panzer crew in a variety of clothing.

While the camo pattern is very interesting, I wonder how PEC it is (plain, everyday, common)? I was looking at the YouTube film of the Jagdtigers surrendering in Iserlohn at war's end, and the entire unit was dressed in ordinary panzer black.

A quick look suggest that it is the late war pea pattern SS camouflage tanker uniform. A thin, herringbone twill, simple cut uniform, with the non reversible camouflage pattern. Note the National Eagle on the left sleeve, rather than the right breast. For that uniform it looks fairly accurate, and it was supplied to the SS. The addition of National Eagles on the sleeve, shoulder bourds and collar patches was not officially authorised (afaik), but was widespread none the less. The Heer (regular army) would have been more likely to wear the black uniform. Henk

Must have been a different film footage to the one I've looked at as only the jackets seem to be black panzer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHp3nCkPjb4 Trousers could be very dirty camo or fieldgrey, too murky for me to tell. The guy climbing out the Jagdtiger with the machine gun looks to be wearing quite thick trousers, almost padded. They are of course Heer not Waffen SS. As I said, I reckon you could mix and match to create a bit of variety, a combination of camo and black in either the jacket or trousers would be acceptable, and as Henk said the Miniart ones do appear to depict Waffen SS uniforms. Maybe Miniart have to play the same game as Dragon etc. not mention Waffen SS in the title to avoid legality issues in some countries of distribution. Alan

Good eyes, Alan, you are, of course, correct. Aren't the field caps of the Waffen SS different from the M1943 ones, or am I thinking of the garrison/side caps? I hadn't thought about the problems of marketing these items in some parts of Europe.

Hi Bill Only a bit of friendly ragging. I knew what you meant. I think the M1943 field cap is the same, certainly that's what it says in my very old copy of Uniforms, Organization and History of the Waffen SS by Roger Blender & Hugh Taylor I dug out when I got back into modelling. Both with either the double and single button turn ups. Of course the insignia would be different . Some showed just the Totenkopf, some showed that and the SS Eagle above it. Black for Panzer, Field Grey for other Waffen SS units. A simple visored cap in camouflaged material was also brought out without the flaps capability to be brought down to keep the head warm.. I don't think this was general issue to all Waffen SS and it wasn't suppose to carry any insignia but these guys tended to bend the rules to suit there own ideas of style. I've a picture of Max Wunsche in the book wearing a camouflaged hat, not only is it done in the Italian cloth camouflage pattern but carries both eagle and Totenkopf. Alan
