Introduction

Matho models are a new name to me in the world of scale modelling, the company are based in Deinze Belgium and have been operating since 2014 and are a manufacturer of premium quality accessories for scale modellers worldwide. This review is for item number 35033 which is a bag of two 1/35 Plastic watering cans.

Review

The 2 watering cans, which stand at a height of about 1cm, came packed in a small plastic bag backed by a piece of black cardboard. On opening the bag you get to see the fine detail that has been rendered in these 3d printed and very highly detailed UV cured acrylic plastic. This is the first time I have come across 3d printed items and the quality is very good, the end product been translucent in its use of material. The website gives a great introduction on what to expect from the printing process and how to clean up the plastic, which basically entails washing the item(s) in acetone to remove any release oil and very finely sanding out any imperfections. Once this is done the items can then be painted.

Now as plastic watering cans there is very little in the way of painting and then weathering, would just be a base coat and that would be that, so I took a bit of artistic licence and painted them both as rusted metal items following normal process of base coat, wet on wet rust colours, chipping medium followed by top coat (burnt red and German grey in this instance). Then when dry, rubbing away the top coat and painting in chips and polished steel.

Conclusion

These would be a great addition to a diorama, but if used as plastic cans, you would need to check from which period they could be used.

[Editor's note: I have three real plastic ones in my garden right now in 2016, which are dark green, lime green, and red. Spouts are either the same colour or black. Similar metal cans also exist in my local garden shop, so Steve's "rust" paint scheme is viable. In fact I think the plastic cans are modelled on older metal ones. In 1:35 scale my ones would be rather monochrome & boring, as plastic doesn't weather or rust much...]
