The magazine the Art of Modelling has been around for a few years, published by Add On Publishing in Dutch, French, and German. This great looking magazine in now available in English with Issue 1, January – February 2014..

Review

The Art of Modelling is a very professional looking published modelling magazine, very well printed on glossy paper. The articles contain many well photographed and display models in various states of assembly and painting. The first thing I really noticed during my initial “flip”, was the lack of advertising, while there is some, it is minimal, and located at the first couple of pages and back of the magazine.

Right of the bat, the front cover caught my eye with a very impressive looking Wessex, being an armor guy, I was still impressed. It really made me want to look in the magazine. The magazine starts with short editorial from the Editor in Chief, Kristof Pulinckx. The table of contents is just a very short list, not taking up multiple pages, like in some magazines. The magazine then moved into News Facts, cover product news in a well laid out format with images.

Then onto the articles, the work of scratch building on the first article on the BAR, was very impressive, well written with great complimentary images. I must say, even been an armor guy, that likes to dabble in almost anything plastic, the article on the Wessex really impressed me. Again well written, like all the articles in the magazine, with great images and description of progress. One thing I liked about the articles in the Art of Modelling was a list of all the required items used in the build, including a paint list.

Each article is very well done, with step by step images and descriptions of the build. While not specifically an armor or air magazine, it provides a great balance of plastic modelling. The other articles in the first issue include a great lookin T34/76 build, a Cromwell in a winter camouflage, a MIG-21, a great article on painting and weathering a building, and a great looking article on a science fiction build.

Conclusion

In my opinion this is another great magazine, which I am glad to see is now published in English. The magazine is very well written, contains great articles, and I can’t wait for Issue 2. I definitely recommend this magazine to all modellers as it is informative and well laid out.
