Bailey Bridge

There has been a Bailey bridge crossing the river Avon on Salisbury Plain for as long as I can remember, with the bridge known from my youth being replaced by the Royal Engineers in 1995. Everyone knows the area where the bridge is as “Charlie crossing”, and there has I suspect been a Bailey Bridge crossing the river at that point since World War Two. The main differences between the old and new bridge from memory is that the old bridge was only two panels wide rather than three on the new one, and the wooden road surface of the old bridge had a channel down the centre of it.
