Anzac Cove - Gallipoli 1915

  • move

New Zealand and Australian troops took part in the Gallipoli Landings on 25th April 1915. The plan to capture the Ottoman forts in the Dardanelles never really got off the ground, the troops went ashore in the wrong place and the whole landing bogged down very quickly. Some 20,000 troops were pinned down on the beach in an area of about three quarters of a mile square and remained there for a bloody 8 months. The area became known as Anzac Cove. This small vignette from Firestorm Models depicts some of those events and this is my representation of the set, with some small additions and extended ground work.

The last remaining ANZAC troops were finally evacuated on 20th December 1915, the evacuation being much more successful than the original landings.

About Alan McNeilly (AlanL)
FROM: ENGLAND - EAST ANGLIA, UNITED KINGDOM

Greying slightly, but young at heart. I've been teaching adults off and on for most of my life. Left the services in 85 and first started modelling in about 87 for a few years. Then I had a long spell when I didn't build anything (too busy) and really just got started again during the summer of ...

Its always nice to see some WW1 work and this scene is a gem- I think you have really captured the look of the photo and the detail and finishing is excellent. Nice stuff Alan- thanks for sharing!

Hi Karl, Many thanks for the kind comments. There is a lot of opportunity for AM 1/35 scale WW1 subjects as they are not likely to get covered in plastic. Many years ago I built a trench scene from convereted Tamiya figures which has long since been consigned to history but I would like to do another small NWE trench scene at some point, but lack of suitable figures is alwasy a problem. The new Tommy's War figures are excellent but in the wrong scale for me and as yet the range isn't developed enough for a good mix and match choice. Hopefully we will see some developments for this period and scale in the coming years. Cheers Al

I agree- I was actually thinking of seeing if those Tommy's War figures would be suitable for 1/35 but I saw a discussion somewhere (probably here) saying they were, as you said, too big. I would love to see some of the big names tackle WW1 AFV,s, particularly the Sturmpanzerwagen, the FT-17 or the Saint Chamond. Fingers crossed!

Hi Karl, Figure wise a new company to me, but probably known to figure builders is Model Cellar. They have a wide range of figures and busts and some neat looking 1/35 scale figures and accessories. The 2 British Sets are unavailable at the moment but I emailed Paul and he hopes to have them available again mid to late summer. Both British sets (2 figs each) look very good. http://www.modelcellar.com/ Cheers Al

I've seen some of those figures sold elsewhere, didn't know the name of the company though- thanks for the link. I'd very much like them or Tommy's War to do a soldier from the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, that would be awesome.

Hi Karl, If you like stand alone figures then Tommys War is the way to go, unless you want big scale. Cheers Al

I haven't done a 54mm figure in a while now- the Tommy's War ones look good, I will probably go for one at some point. Did you see this big scale release from Model Cellar: It looks pretty good- have you ever done one of their busts?

Hi Karl, Yes, Model Cellar have some fine busts. I've never done one, too many things in 1/35 scale going on. They have some 1/35 scale Tommies I'm interested in but they are OOP at the moment, although Paul say they might be available later in the year. Cheers Al
