Royal Artillery 17pdr Anti-Tank Gun

  • move
The 17pdr anti tank gun was conceived as early as 1941, although production delays meant it didn't enter service immediately. By 1943 the urgency to deploy them meant that the first guns were mounted on a modified 25pdr Mk I carriage, these being known as the 17/25pdr, sometimes referred to as the Pheasant. The 17pdr Mk I was the first full production version and as numbers increased these guns became more available and were issued to both Royal Artillery and Line units. This is my effort on the Bronco 17pdr Mk I and crew, displayed dug in during the later part of the war. The gun had a maximum range of 10,000 yds, but effective penetration was considered best at 4,000 yds. The 17pdr was the most effective anti tank weapon fielded by the Allies during WW2 and the gun was mounted in tanks and tracked vehicles such as the Archer.
