The Ridgeback is a conversion of the US 4x4 FP Inc Cougar (MPUPV) Medium Protected Urban Patrol Vehicle. From 2008 157 Ridgebacks have been delivered and retrofitted with UK armour upgrades and electronics and NP Aerospace in Coventry. The Ridgeback is the 4x4 variant of the Mastiff 6x6 fitted with the same Caterpillar C7 FMM Diesel engine. Ridgeback is 2 metres shorter and 1 metre slimmer than the Mastiff and there are four variants for different roles; Troop Carrier, Protected Weapons Station, Ambulance and Command Post Vehicle. Ridgeback entered service with the MOD in June 2009. The vehicle has three doors (two in front and one rear double sized crew door) and one topside hatch, Talon IEDD remote search robot can be carried in the rear stowage. Ridgeback has various accessories for safety and usability including harnesses for seats, a comprehensive integral tool kit, ballistic glass that can withstand strong ballistic impacts, infrared/blackout lighting, duel spare wheels, fire extinguisher system, shielded ammunition storage and a 4,090Kg capacity electronic winch. The multi-camera feeds to the TV screens inside give the crew impressive situational awareness from within. The UK has over 500 Cougar based vehicles including Ridgeback 4x4, Mastiff 6x6 and Wolfhound 6x6 utility.
