Here are some photos of a recent build by Larry Uchmanowicz. It is Dragon's 1/35th scale T-34/72, with riders. The finish is Russian armor green, with the very good kit decals. This was followed with an overspray of very thinned down flat white, followed by a thin brown wash to show through the rust. The bags and packs are from my spares box. The figures are painted and then weathered using a variety of powders and washes. The flag is Lead foil with a home-made decals for the Hammer and Sickle. The base is scratch built, using a cheap wooden base, and a sheet of foam board with the tread pattern scribed in. Once finished, the tanks and base were coated with future and then lightly covered with finely shaved pastel chalk.

I love the tank. I love the riders. I am probably just being nitpicky, but I am a little uncomfortable with the soldiers in what looks to me to be summer weight uniforms perched atop a tank and base that are pretty evocative of much colder weather. It's just I get cold very easily and tend to project that a bit. All in all avery impressive piece of work, far better that my meager efforts have produced thus far . . .

Thanks for the kind comments. Actually, the uniforms were pretty standard "puffy" jackets and pants the soviets wore in the winter. The additon to this was the greatcoat for really cold weather. There is a great book, IVAN'S WAR, by Catherine Merridale that talks about standard gear among other things. Summer uniforms were lighter than these. I try to get as realistic as i can, biut budget and availability take over, a problem i think we all share!

I've read and enjoyed "Ivan's War" and it is a good source. What tipped toward thinking they were under dressed for the weather was that they had bare hands . . . I'm such a wuss in the cold that any time it gets below 59 F, Igot my gloves on. What came to mind as I thoroughly admired your work was that a little putty on some of the hands to simulate mittens and painting some the hands brown or black to suggest gloves would have made me feel a bit cozier . . .

Nice composition, and the tank & riders look pretty good. Just a few points of constructive criticism though: 1) I'm less convinced by the groundwork. It all looks a bit too flat and "clean". 2) The troops on the deck of the tank would probably have scuffed away most of the snow atop the tank as it speeds its way across the (presumably bumpy) terrain. Again - the snow is a tad too fresh & neat, and a bit over-done on the flat surfaces of the tank where the troops are. 3) The flag could do with dirtying up a bit (otherwise it looks great). Overall it's a really nice scene. But I agree with KVD regarding the missing scuff/boot marks in the snow on the rear deck of the T-34. And maybe it's me, but the flag looks just a bit too big for one guy to be holding it with one hand on the back of a moving vehicle. The painting on both the vehicle and soldiers is really good.

Overall I'd say nice build BUT a few things stand out. First up, never heard of a T-34/72 I assume you mean T-34/76? Otherwise you have the tank following previous tracks but not leaving any itself. The men on the tank, one looks like he's lining up for a shot, another crouched behind the turret looking at the same target? But then you have a guy right on top of the turret casual as all hell. As I said overall a well done diorama (with very nice paintwork) with just a few issues.
