Rolf Steiner: Cross of Iron

the piece
  • Brand: Alexandros Models Sculptor: Ebroin Song
  • Material: Resin
  • Scale: 1/10 (200mm)
  • Pieces: 15
The bust is a masterful sculpt by Korean sculptor, Eborin, for Alexandros Models. Casting is sharp and without air bubbles. Assembly is straight forward with minimal clean up. Resemblance to James Coburn is uncanny!

Rendering the face
Started off with the head, highlights and shadows were quickly marked to block out the working areas; see photo 1. The second image shows the result after an hour of mucking around.

The colours (Jo Sonja Acrylics) used to render the face are as follows:
  • Base: Raw Sienna + Skin Tone Base + Naples Yellow Hue + Plum Pink Highlights: Naples Yellow Hue
  • Shadows: Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Brown Madder
Photos 3 and 4 show the completed face. (I typically paint the eyes after the face is completed)

Rendering the uniform
Photo 5. The colour of the feldbluse was obtained by mixing Jo Sonja French Blue and Olive Green.

The result is a rather dull looking mixture but still lacking the darker shades for field grey. To that, I added just a little Prussian Blue to darken it. (Ultramarine blue would be too bright). If you added too much Prussian Blue, add a little Olive Green to push it back towards green. You should be getting a dark blue-greenish mix. Finally add some Cad Orange to "kill"/dull the green to a slightly greyish color.

Rendering the camouflage jacket
Photo 6. References are vital for the rendering of any camouflage material.

In this case, we are rendering the Splittermuster for the Heer which consists of larger patterns than that of the Luftwaffe.

Attaching the sling to the PPsH
Photo 7. Attaching the sling to the PPsH was challenging as the sling needs to angle quite a fair bit.

To increase the range of movement, a small loop was fashioned from fine wire and the sling was attached to it. This was followed by drilling a hole through the "sling loop" on the barrel and finally attaching the sling to the weapon.

This is a delicate operation and must be undertaken with care, as a slip might result in breakage.

Ben, you are a hell of a painter!! What you do is craft in perfection, and in our medium that is art!! I am not happy with the yellow tone in the Tarnmuster, but that's my problem! Congratulations Sir! Cheers Romain
