Museum of Army Flying

What to do with yourself if you find yourself with a few hours going begging and you are anywhere near Salisbury in Wiltshire or Andover in Hampshire. Well you could do far worse than taking a trip out to Middle Wallop where you will find the Museum of Army Flying. Why is an Armour site covering this museum? Well it is perhaps the best when it comes to the gliders used by Airborne troops, it also has everything from armoured vehicles and artillery pieces to small arms and of course a lot of helicopters.

There are a nice number of manikin dioramas covering troops serving across the globe as part of the British Army in both War and Peace time. The layout of the aircraft and helicopters is a little crowded in places due to the limited space and their large size, but the staff have done a good job of providing as much access as possible and lighting is pretty good.

There are a number of activities to keep your kids quiet and amused if you have them and entry prices are very good. It is also worth mentioning that British TAX payers can gift aid their entry fee and in return you are given free access to the museum for the next year. The restaurant on site is elevated and again prices are good, not one of those museums that fleeces you for a drink. Perhaps one of the highlights is that the museum is right next door to an Army Air Corps base which has various helicopters flying out of it all the time. For most I suspect seeing the Apache helicopter going through its paces will be a highlight of the trip, and assuming the weather is OK you can watch them from the raised outside area while eating and drinking from the cafeteria.
