Clumps of Grass

Making Grass Clumps
This is a short and simple tutorial on how to make grass clumps using cheap and readily available materials. Materials:
  • 1) Painters brush (preferably those with white/cream colored bristles)
  • 2) Wall putty / spackle
  • 3) PVA glue
  • 4) Static grass
  • 5) Soil/earth or whatever ground material
Make sure to pre-cut the painters brush bristles to the desired length before proceeding with Step 1.
Step 1
Place a small amount (slightly smaller than an M&M chocolate candy) of Wall Putty or Spackle onto the desired location of the diorama. Gently press or tap the Wall Putty or Spackle until the desired shape is achieved – it must look like a small mound.
Step 2
Using an old brush, gently apply diluted PVA glue over the recently shaped Wall Putty or Spackle. The diluted PVA glue will provide additional adhesion for the next step.
Step 3
Plant the pre-cut painters brush bristles onto the center of the putty mound while the PVA glue is still wet.
Step 4
Place your index finger on top of the bristles and then rotate it gently until the bristles spreads outward evenly.
Step 5
Allow the semi-finished grass clump to set or cure. Once fully dried, you can trim some of the bristles to create an uneven form similar to real grass clumps.
Step 6
Cover the exposed putty mound with soil/earth or whatever ground material was used in the diorama.
Step 7
Wet the finished grass clump with diluted PVA glue and then sprinkle a considerable amount of static grass. Once dry, paint finished grass clump with the desired color to match diorama setting
