The First Tigers
The first Tiger 1's delivered were sent to Schwere Panzerabteilung 502 [511] in August 1942- Russian front, Leningrad area. These were painted German Grey and lacking in all the details usually associated with Tigers - side sponsons and mounting bolts, turret stowage bin, wide front fenders, exhaust covers etc. From what I can glean from TIC 1, Tiger- History of the Legendary Weapon and various other sources, the first four Tigers sent to 502 were sent to the first company only. One of these was numbered 111 and initially was delivered without a turret bin in August. It also can be identified by the unusual metal plate on the front glacis plate.
Ian found images of 111 going toward the front. They showed no turret bin and one nice shot I had for the rear stowage and turret art.
My 111
I used a Late Tiger 1 Tamiya body with Aber brass, Kasten tracks and wheels, Jordi turned barrel and a full 'scratched' interior. I took two figures from the Wespe kit and used them as they really looked cold. I used decals from one of the Tamiya armor decal sheets (it would be nice if these were still available) and built up the base in the usual way. I have also left on the engine deck vent cover as I cannot find a reliable reference to show this as missing on 111. I did make the mistake of leaving the engine hatch stoppers, I only just realised that they should be removed when I looked at the new dragon kit and went back to my 'Modellers Guide to the Tiger Tank' book

Beautifully done. I think the detailing on the diorama is great.....small things that people never think about, like the steel-rim on the wagon-wheel comeing off etc., are so realistic. Cheers Gene

Ian: Great piece of work. The weathering looks great and the ruins are awesome. I personally think the figures look very cold The attention to deatil is really what gets your attention. The Leningrad sign is a piece of genius. Keep up the good work.

Thanks guys for your interest and the extra effort of adding a comment or two. I'm glad you all enjoyed the details and the weathering as this is what I enjoy the most. I love doing the base as much as the actual model as thesmall base sets off the tank more than justa bland piece of timber. I always use a base this size for my 1/35 scale displays. Ian, the mud splatters are done with artist oils and a medium size brush. I used a mix of sienna's and umbers to achieve the varying shades of mud. Mud of the base was done with oils as well. Hope this helps.

Same here. Nice one Ian. As already mentioned all the details are excellent. The Wespe figures are perfect for the scene ... Id recognise them anywhere! Very useful. They can actually be purcahased a seperate set (89538) for anyone whos interested. The black and white photograph with background is another nice touch!

An absolutely incredible piece. I can appreciate your level of excellence. I am currently working on T1 ausfE DML kit and would like to scratch build the driver and radio op positions. Would you be able to direct me to a website that I can find diagrams of these areas please? Keep up the fantastic work......you are inspiring us all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
