hi all,
when you talk about building ruins with styrene what kind of styrene are you talking about, container wise, do you mean the kind of trays that meat comes packed on or what, im confused cos ive tried different kinds of styrenes obviously not the right stuff and its just not good to work with.

Here in the States you can buy sheet styrene under a couple of brand names, like Evergreen and Plastruct. They also have textures, like bricks and cobblestones. You might find a better selection in a model Railroad shop.

You can find styrene sheets at stores that sell "FOR RENT", NO PARKING", etc, type of signs. They're inexpensive and come in different sizes. It's a good way to get used to working with the material until you want ot order some specific sheets from Evergreen.

Styrene is incredible. You can build anything with it and brands like Evergreen produce it in every form or shape you can think of. Sheets, tubes, strips, clear, half-rounds, quarter rounds... I could go on. Invest in some of this.

Meat trays are expanded polystyrene, which has had a foaming agent added to create bubbles (styrofoam is one brand). It makes it good for insulating cold products, but not very useful for modeling. If you do use it for something, don't use regular styrene cement, as it will dissolve into goo. Use super glue, epoxy, or contact cement.
Polystyrene, (or just styrene) is available in all kinds of different thicknesses, textures and shapes. Evergreen and Plastruct offer these white styrene products. Plastruct also sells Acrybutyl styrene sheets and architectural shapes, a gray plastic which requires specialist cements, so try to get the regular white products and avoid the aggravation.
