About how long should it take to upload eight 1.5mb pictures to the kitmaker network. My computer is running Windows XP.
These will be my first pictures to be uploaded.
Thanks!

Hi Sam, it really all depends on your internet connection, mate...dial-up is gonna take forever, high speed, not long at all...

We have a T1 line into our house ( we used to have a business in our basement) so I assume that is fast enough.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Is that 1.5Mb per photo? i.e. you want to upload 12Mb of photos or 1.5Mb total?
If it's 1.5Mb per photo you may want to consider resizing those photos as firstly you're going to run out of gallery space on this first upload, and secondly please bear the viewers of the photos in mind... it takes quite a while for a 1.5Mb photo to display to the screen over the web...

Thanks a lot, Tarok. I hadn't factored in the limited gallery space. It would have been 12Mb total.
Again, thanks for the heads up!

Err... well not exactly. First off I just reset the hard maximum file size for all non-staff users to 3Mb (3072Kb). If you upload a file that size or smaller the system will almost certainly resize the image as it will be beyond the 800 x 600 maximum image size. The resized file would be a JPG sized to either 800 x 600 or 600 x 800 and would have about 30-40% JPG compression added. This would likely bring the image down to around 100-300Kb.
However the upload time for 5 1.5Mb files might be longer than the script allows for a server process. So there is always the risk of timing out with larger files unless both your ISP and the server are running at best speeds.
The 'worst case' scenario would now be that a user uploads a very large uncompressed JPG file that is smaller than 800 x 600. These images could be 1-2Mb and would rapidly use up all their storage space.
I hope that helps.
Cheers,
Jim
