Woodland scenics makes long grass in different shades.. Or you could use the bristles from a paint brush. Just paint then the shades you need and you are away to the races...

In addition to Dave's advice, you can try hemp rope (plumber's type)
Just cut jagged lengths in clumps and try to blend in some shorter grasses.

I use old violin bow strings as i fouind horse hair has a good look to it and it takes enamel paint well. if you have a shop nearby that restrings bows you can get it free of charge as they have no use for it.

I have found that the best type of brush for this is the "natural bristle" type.Usually pig/boar hair.Tints very well with all types of paint and glues with anything just about.
cheers!

cool i will give it a go and see what is best.
obviously i would not put a field of long grass as this would be expensive and time consuming can anyone give me an idea on the right mix of grass/long grass? what looks right?
thanks for your time

German companies called "Noch" and "Heki", have products called wild grass whick is about 15 - 20mm long. It comes like a small carpet and you just cut to fit the area required, or even pull it out in clumps and mix in with areas of static grass. Quite useful and should be available from model railroad sources.

Woodland Scenics makes a nice grass but I found it to be very fine. My next tall grass diorama I will most likely use the paint brush method.

Hi guys,
I've posted this before, but I still find it's the best and really cheap method for long grass.
Find a salon or dept.store that sells womens wigs or a party supply store.
You can get all shades of grass colours.
Just cut small amounts, the same as you do with Woodland Scenics.
For a small investment you have years supply of realistic looking grass.

G'day Rob,
Here is a little dio I did a while ago.
It is about the Rhodesian Selous Scouts.
The long grass was quite easy. Go to a hardware store (here in Oz it is Bunning’s) and buy the cheapest paint brushes you can find.
However the brush bristles must be the nylon ones and not the straw or hog hair.
Cut out a clump of the "grass" and with a ciggie lighter ( careful )melt the bottom of the hairs together, but before it cools, push the “grass” onto the ground work. You don’t want to melt it to much otherwise you will end up with a pile of plastic instead of grass.
Hope this is not to vague.
Cheers Jason
