I found a nice picture of M5A1 I'd like to (eventually) build. It's a front view with clearly visible unit identification markings: Vehicle #4, Co. B, 67th Armored Reg., 2nd Armored Div. The picture was taken in November 44 in the town of Beggendorf, Germany by Joseph D. Karr of 167th Signal Corps.

My question might be the silly one: is it somehow possible to find out the army registration number? The one that appears on the side of the hull like here (Sherman from the same unit at the same place).

BTW: the same picture appears in S. Zaloga's book on Stuart tanks. It however has most of the unit ID 'censored'...

Thanks a lot.

I played a bit with the mentioned picture in some photo-editing software and it almost seems to me that the army registration number on the side of the hull is intentionally painted over with lighter color. That puzzles me a bit. I know that unit marking have been sometimes covered (there is even a note on that in the regulations, I think) as the same picture in Zaloga's book shows. I'm not sure though about covering registration number (for what?, it's not a 'sentitive' info I would say).

Are there any info on covering army reg. number available?

Is it possible, it's actually same sort of picture modification (the same way, the Zaloga's photo has div. and reg. markings covered)?
