What was that song by devo?? "He was a mongoloid, he was a mongoloid" I always think of that song when I see Tam figs. I really like the DML figs, I {{{{LOVE}}}} Alpine, Wolf and Verlinden, but Tamiya figures jusy dont cut it for me anymore.

I think Tamiya older figures are great for trying out colours and when starting to paint faces.

Because they are cheap, I can see the point, but IMO they´re not good when starting out. Because of the lack of detail and/or soft detail, they are actually harder to paint, whch can lead to frustration, slow down the learning curve and lead to modellers giving up on figures completely.
How many modellers today, dont include a figure because they came from the age where a token figure or two was included in a kit, and almsot impossible to paint because of the above problem? I can see why many were dissheartened with their intiial results. These same modellers can paint intricate wood detail on pioneer tools, yet are no longer willing to try out a figure.
With the quality of modern figures, those early Tamiya figures are no better than than the green/grey soldiers, and in fact have even less detail than some of those.

Monogram.... OMG! Are they still around? Aren't they the outfit that used to make Snap-Tite models? IIRC, those weren't bad at all, and an eight-year-old kid could produce something decent in short order. If they're making armor models... hmmm!

Oops... I'm dating myself, aren't I? LOL!

Bob,
Lol...yes I have some of my original Monogram figs in a spares box that date back to my early years in modeling (1973 or so). Not only were they really small scale wise but they had almost humorous detail issues.

I should dig them out and shoot nostalgia pics.
