Very nice diorama- I really like the figures and the general lay out; but I have 2 questions
1. how did the Russian get in the bed.
2. how did the Germans troops get on the 2nd floor?
Other than that its a great scene.
keep up the good work.

Eaglesmack,
I like your dio buddy! Lot's of action! You did a great job with alot of small details that alot of modelers overlook such as the straps holding the kit on the side of the Wespe. The broken glass in the shattered window frames are also a nice touch. Is the furniure in your Dio scratch built? A couple of things you may try in your next winter dio might be to add a light dusting of snow and maybe having some of the figs wearing the Mouse gray side of there winter suits.

I knew this question would be asked. I took a little artistic freedom in "beaming" the occupants to the 2nd Fl. A stairway or ladder would not fit into the DIO and I didn't want to put the Russian on the 1st fl. and out of view. The theme is the Germans over running a house formerly occupied by the Soviets, who then had to leave their dead comrad behind.

Agreed - why would the germans be wearing the white winter camo parka's if there is no snow ??

When I was looking on line for Wespe pictures I saw in a number of them with the kits hanging off the side. Even more so than bed rolls.

All of the furniture is from scratch.

I actually bought snow for this dio but I have never used it before and did not want to ruin the dio. I think for a second diorama it came out pretty good as it is but I agree, snow would have added realism if I was comfortable with that technique.

Great dio you got there EagleSmack! I realy liked it especially the "upper floor" part of it.
Although a tad of snow and a small ladder or something representing how the germans got to up the second floor would be nice to see.

Great job....keep it up!

Very, very good S.B.
I'd have to agree with the others about the snow, but if your not comfortable with that technique yet, so be it.
The chest of drawers needs some handles and, If I'm truthful I don't like the position of the camo net on the Wespe.
I have no idea if I'm correct but I think something draped over the barrel like that could tangle when the gun recoiled after firing and hamper the travel back into 'battery'. Maybe someone else will have a better knowledge of this than me.
I do think it needs something to tie it all together. Dust maybe if not snow, and having some of the figures wearing some items of clothing camouflage side out might be add some charachter to them. They all look a little too 'the same' to me and I think a unit would be very lucky to get a full issue of winter kit for everyone.
All the best

Hi Eaglesmack, really nice diorama mate, I'd be proud of finishing one like that.....

Without echoing afew of the others, I'd say the first and foremost thing that does stand out for me is the absence of snow...... The white camoflage uniforms stand out a mile, not very reassuring for a worried German!! Without the white uniforms & russian casualty, the diorama could be set almost anywhere in western Europe.

I had the same worry as you have a couple of times, worrying about ruining a decent diorama with dodgy snow. So without going overboard & therefore playing it safe, I just dusted mine with bicarbonate of soda using a small fine sieve. In an ideal world there would be some snow drifts, footprints, even slush, but at least it gave the scene some improvement & realism, instead of just leaving it all plain. It blended in the uniforms to the surroundings.

Really nice though, especially for your second diorama......
SIMON.

Well so be it. I will practice with the snow and install snow into this diorama. It clearly is the main downfall and I agree with everyone. White uniforms in a non-snow environment is somewhat... lets just say inaccurate. I truly wanted snow to be a part of this from the beginning but once I had it pretty much completed I just thought I would turn a decent 2nd Dio into a snowy mess.

As far as the camo netting being over the barrel I got that from WWII WESPE photos on line. So if the actual Germans did it that way I thought my 1/35 Germans could too. The same with the kit over the side of the crew compartment, I saw a number of Wespe photos with kits hanging from the crew compartment. I actually wished I hung more of them.

Ok.... I am taking all of your constructive critisism serious and I am going to add snow.

My questions are...

How should I approach this?

Would you just add a dusting of snow?

Would you add a lot of snow on less traveled areas?

Any help would be appreciated and thank you.

Great diorama. Great action and there are a lot of small scenes included in this diorama. It is every well tied together to tell an overall story.

I must admit I do not see any problems in how the Germans got to the 2nd floor. It is quite easy supporting your collegue to get up to the 2nd floor. The problem would be if nobody where at the ground level.

In the army we always got people to the top floors. Simply by pushing/lifting them up there. In the diorama there seems to be a maximum of 4 meters between the floors. Two guys could easily get a third guy up. No problem. You would always go for the high ground so it would be more unrealistic if nobody was at the second floor.

Great Wespe, I remember seeing the pictures that you obviously based the stowage on.

As already pointed out you would really not like running around in the city in white smocks if there is no snow. So some snow might be a good idea.

Great work - thanks for sharing

Eagle,
I think just a light dusting of snow would look good. Maybe deepr drifts closr to the outside of the ruin. For Snow I have always used baking soda sprinkled over white glue. Just brush a light coat of glue where you want the snow then sprinkle on the baking soda. You may have to do several layers to get the effect you are looking for. Some people say the baking soda changes color of a long period of time but I haven't had it happen to any of my winter dio's yet.
